Poked around the hell hole area because it looked too good to be true, and some silver duct tape was peeking through. Not unexpected.

I had my two sons re-key the door locks on my 914 to match the ignition key.

Thanks to World members for providing threads on removing door handles and rekeying locks. I printed them out and my sons were able to do the job themselves (with a little help from dad).

Thanks for helping me pass the torch!

QUOTE(mrbubblehead @ Dec 17 2011, 10:07 PM) *

i just wanted to start a thread to see what you guys do day to day on your cars.

i'll start,

about a month ago, i pulled my engine and trans to put in a new clutch. had the flywheel lightened and resurfaced. but what i didnt know is that i had to shim the little ball that the clutch arm rides on, after a resurfacing. so guess what i did today?

yup, pulled the trans and put an extra washer under the ball. you have to goop up both washers to get it to seal because the threaded hole goes all the way thru to the inside of the trans. i also replaced the plastic cup that the ball rides in. the throwout bearing and its little plastic blocks were fine so i buttoned every thing back up. 5 hours total. i think this has been the cheapest repair yet on my car. $2.75 for the little plastic cup.

what did you do to your 914 today?

I installed a battery tray and hold down system in my v-8 converted 73 and hooked up the flip up motors for the headlights (PO had the headlights, motors, flipups, out).
And wouldn't ya know it, the flip ups aren't working right (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

i added a third seat belt in the center by bolting it on with the other latches. then stuffed an old minibike seat in the center for a seat. it fits snugly under the back pad and can be slid out to wherever is comfortable when in use. just so my freinds can ride on short trips. Did the 914 ever come with the option for a third belt? should be legal I guess

I recently changed motors and I also made several changes to my CIS system but I don't have a thread on that.

What did I do, today, on my 914 ? Well, let's see !?! Not a damn thing.
For the last year or so, I have been working on:
~
My son's '65 VW Notcho ~ keeping it running and replacing all of the CANADIAN
shade tree repairs on it. It has responded well to all repairs, upgrades and
replacement parts. Everything has stablized for the past 8 months and now,
tomorrow, we (my son, and I) will be replacing the tie-rods and ball-joints.
~
Last month it was my daughters' MKIV 1.8T GTI. I had to chase down the problem
of cooling fans not working.
Replaced to sensors and a main fuse. Was successful with that. Replaced a cracked
center grille with a new after market one. Looks good !
Now I have to find out why her passenger rear speaker isn't working.
~
And for the last several months, we have been working on the '70 Fasty. My son and
I have been purchasing a gazillion parts for it. I have been tearing down the seats
and cleaning and painting the bases and spring assemblies and rebuilding them.
What's left is a little bit of body work, then sanding and preping for paint, then onto
assembling everything, carpet kit, interior panels, headliner and re-assemble the
engine and prep for run-in.
~
Today, my wife's jeep "JUST TURNED OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD" (she said).
Borrowed my daughter's car to get to where my wife was, and the jeep fired right-up
(because it likes me and not her) and I got it home. This evening it wouldn't fire.
So I extracted a P0320 code, (crank position sensor) and will be replacing that tomorrow.
IT NEVER ENDS !!!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hissyfit.gif)
