After having my 914 in storage for 18 months I finally got it out and drove it. Shit, I forgot how fast it is after using my 70 Ghia for a DD while I sorted out its many problems. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/chair.gif)

Said Goodbye to the HSR Car (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif) Off to England

What's the story on that blue one?

The Blue One wasn't mine! It was from a Seller about 2 Miles South of me and It's going to the same Buyer in England. It's a 70 or 71, pretty crude track car build start. Had a Roll-Bar/Cage, Bus Motor that he told the Buyer was something else, TailShifter that was converted to SS, but still had the TS Rear Cone. The Seller was a Pain in the Ass - the Car was full of parts & he would bolt the motor/tranny in for Transport. The guy in England asked me ( & George helped) to get the Motor & Tranny set into my car vs having to crate it up. Then the Seller held up the shipping for over a week & 1/2. Then he was a jerk to the Transporter

I go to hop in the 914 yesterday and the paint on my rear trunk lid is all cracked and such from it being so cold, a good chunk of it has blown off so far. I guess I'll have to repaint it. It's weird that the same thing didn't happen to the front.

It's painted with some kind of automotive spray paint from home depot, it's held up pretty well for a few years.

My 5 year old daughter insisted me that we use the blue car going to her doctor's appointment. Well here is a picture of her after doctor's check up in Kaiser. Drove it for a 25 minutes side street one way. And what I noticed after removing the rain tray this afternoon from the engine hood, my temp stayed only to a maximum of 210 degrees.

After a week of freezing weather, we went up to the 20's today. I started it to warm it up, it started right up. I expected a struggle with the carbs at this temp.

Fixed my turn signals. It was a bad connection in the hazard switch. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Fixed my headlight high/low toggle. It was unplugged at the relay. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

And my speedometer died. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Finished my door panels.
hand layup carbon fiber.

Here are the bare sheets that we made with vacuum bag & a piece of glass.
The template is laying on top. We rough cut the sheets with a tile saw to that shape, then trimmed them down with a belt sander.

The top lips were vacuum bagged over a wooden positive mold

There is no hardware inside the door except the latch.
It is so cool to slam the door and have it sound like a drum.

Today I drove my car for the first time in >2 years! Just a quick test drive on Mulholland with a little photo op. I'm sorting out a bunch of details. Tidied-up some wiring, rolled the fender lips for better clearance, put on a Rennline alternator/fan band, etc. I may put on the graphics tomorrow.

Did the first shakedown run through the neighborhood yesterday in my '71 after a 2yr+ build. Made it all they way around the block and back up the driveway and into the garage without anything failing or falling off. Probably the first time the car has moved and stopped under its own power since the '90s.

I've been trying to do more work on the car, so I adjusted the valves successfully myself last week. Unfortunately, I didn't have new gaskets and I got a pretty big leak after putting the valve covers back on. Today I got around to putting in a new gasket which fixed the leak. I know it's a small thing, but it's nice to actually fix something myself.

Ripped out the last of the old battery->fusebox wiring, wrapped the wiring in new hi-temp split loom, bolted in the 914ap speaker panels (nice parts!). Removed the ancient passenger harness and replaced it with a new Schroth number. Hope we never need them, but better safe than sorry.

Tried to find somewhere to mount my $20 eBay amplifier, but nope, too big, too heavy. Hopefully the PA275 that's in the mail will be light enough to hang off the old DIN rear pin.

Installed a Painless F5 fan controller... then realised that Rengegade used a 3/4 NPT fitting for the sensor on the radiator and making a 3/8 to 3/4 adapter using a 3/8 to 1/2 and 1/2 to 3/4 adapter results in something that will almost certainly not work. Bah.

Built a panel to mount the GM ECM and assorted other bits for the TBI conversion in the trunk.

Attached Image

Taught my homebrew LED instrument panel to read the data stream from the EBL Flash in the GM ECM; will let me do away with the speedo, tach, coolant temperature sensor wiring, read trouble codes, etc. Still a shocking ratsnest, but that's prototypes for you...

Attached Image

Cleaned all the greasy fingerprints off the fenders and decided to call it a day. Everything lights up, so hopefully it'll start again.

Order the thicker gaskets from Mark at 914rubber.com. They DO NOT leak (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)
