I finally applied my race numbers last night, as well as a factory racecar-style hood crest decal. I still have a bunch of other decals to put on but probably not till later.

Also I just picked up my new Braid 15x9 repro Fuchs with fresh Hoosiers. They seem like nice wheels and I will buy more if this pair works out well.

Will try to post pics this weekend from Willow Springs.

Phil, how long are the studs you put in the hubs? ... maybe that's the issue (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)
Mark,

took a quick look this morning, and with the rotor in place the lugs stick out
about 1&9/16, just over 1.5".
Eric said he could sent over different length ones, but that would be a pain and i'd have to wait for those to come. or if i have enough room i could safely use a small spacer, so just for now my quickest two options are either,
A; get lug nuts that are open ended, or
B; use my closed ones with a 5mm spacer. I had 195/55/15 on the EMPI that i just took off, so since my fender lips are rolled in, i should be o.k. to run the fuchs with my 195/65's(14) and a 5mm spacer. i just want to get the car on the ground this weekend so that i can pull the front wheels to get then shipped out next week. will the local flaps have the proper thread lug nuts?

pjw
Hey Phil,

Not sure what the cost or availability is for 5mm spacers, but Pelican sells a set of open lug nuts for $40. if you can't find a set of used ones locally (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) ... Click here

Mark,
Thanks for the info. i found those on automotion, AA and pelican, same price everywhere. I like the acorn ones and they have tall acorn ones too, but i ordered these also because they are required for any D.E. or track stuff, and i will be taking out to Robeling Road for some PCA DE stuff soon as its finished!!
I could have ordered the spacers but they are $$ and thought even 5mm spacers might make it a bit tight in the fenders on my narrow body car, although i think with the lips rolled under i would have been o.k.
Most good spacers were like $25 or more each, so i opted for the open lug nuts.

i checked everywhere today, no one has the 14, 1.5 threading in stock. I ordered them from pelicat

Test fitting a Fuchs wheels with old 195x60x15 tires if it will have a nice fit on a narrow body. Thanks for my cousin who came down from Bay Area to visit my family and with this free wheels. Plan of polishing them and buy a set of new tires.

There's a small plastic end cap that attaches to the end of the scraper (it screws into the door), so you'll need to trim the scraper when you go to install the end cap.

Which end cap you need depends on the year of your car:

Bled the MC on the bug, then re-bled the wheel cylinders - all four corners are working great now (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)

Got the bug motor all back together with all the correct tins, hoses, stock air filter, etc. and got rid of most of the chrome aftermarket crap the PO stuck on there (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Also, installed a new sound system in the Westy Camper (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rock_band.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tunez.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/party.gif)

A very rare fuel tank that could be obtained for 356s and early 911s were 100 liter tanks (approx 26 gallons). Again a VERY rare item and BIG $$$ to find an original one.

Drove the 'BB' up to Azusa yesterday for a dinner gathering at the Canyon City BBQ (80 mile RT). I need to get my ass in gear and re-jet the carbs - still not quite right (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

I'll be devoting most of my free time over the next few weeks getting the Bug back on the ground and preparing the Westy for it's maiden camping voyage to Cuddeback Dry Lake (same w/e as the RT-66 event) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

In addition to an oil change and a minor tune-up, I need to install some solar panels and 'nerdy' communications antennas on the Westy.

Drove it with my wife and she took a picture of me (sorry for the tongue out, making a funny face on my wife) with 65 mph under an overpass along 405 freeway around long beach airport.

Nice toys Jeff (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

More Vanagon work today :

Removed the curtains and rear upholstery, washed the fabric and sprayed the foam pads with Febeze

Fabricated some brackets for a roof rack ...

... and got them installed right around sundown.

Plans for tomorrow : Install the cross rails and install two 100 watt solar panels on the rack (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)

914 content: I still have a couple of them (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Nice, I just installed three solar panel to heat the pool at my Mothers place in Nevada City, last year wired them in a 14k back up generator.

Last year I built a shop in Isleton, wired it for generator and solar, they got solar panels installed, 36x50 shop no utilities at all. Love solar.

914 content

Tried the new wheels on the new driver...fit great, now to clean them up, get some new tires mounted and get that thing back on he road. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

I finished installing the brackets for the front sway bar on the left side. I welded the hole closed that I drilled in the wrong place, and I made two patches and welded those in. Finally I scrubbed everything under the gas tank.

Need to have a snow day more often!

More Vanagon ...

Changed the design a little - so I had to remove the brackets and make a fixture to uniformly bend the upper ends of the brackets ...

Attached Image

Cut a couple lengths of shallow aluminum UniStrut for the cross rails ...

Attached Image

and installed two 100-watt mono-crystalline panels (wired in parallel) ... approx 15 Amps of power in full sunlight (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)

Attached Image

I need to fabricate a wind deflector for the leading edge of the panels next. Maybe a 914 'duck tail' trunk spoiler will do the trick (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

I'll be installing a 20 Amp charge controller, an Odyssey sealed battery and a 1500-watt power inverter under the rear seat.
