i just wanted to start a thread to see what you guys do day to day on your cars.

i'll start,

about a month ago, i pulled my engine and trans to put in a new clutch. had the flywheel lightened and resurfaced. but what i didnt know is that i had to shim the little ball that the clutch arm rides on, after a resurfacing. so guess what i did today?

yup, pulled the trans and put an extra washer under the ball. you have to goop up both washers to get it to seal because the threaded hole goes all the way thru to the inside of the trans. i also replaced the plastic cup that the ball rides in. the throwout bearing and its little plastic blocks were fine so i buttoned every thing back up. 5 hours total. i think this has been the cheapest repair yet on my car. $2.75 for the little plastic cup.

what did you do to your 914 today?

Picked up a really nice set of front strut assembles for the five bolt conversion on my black 73. Bought them from Garold at the Stoddard Swap Meet on Sat.

Finally have top off weather here in the NW so fired up the beast and went to the All Convertibles Show at the Triple X in Issaquah. Lots of great cars, only saw one other 914. (Blue, across the street). Nice drive after but, experienced a strange hard start after a brief stop on the way home. Cranked but no fire. Ultimately started and made it home. Fired right up, as usual, this afternoon.

Installed the new to me header that arrived this week. Will have to weld in the o2 sensor bung on the weekend but for now it drives fine.

Suspension - Done.
Rubber makes contact with earth for first time in years.
Need to reset rear shock spring height, its way too tight.
But its a roller ready for the paint booth.

Saturday:
Got the rear wheel up on a makeshift 2x4 ramp and reinstalled my repaired shift rod. Had to have my 7 year old sit inside and hold the shifter while I lined up the cone screw underneath. Later, did about a 60-mile round-trip up and down the beautiful George Washington Parkway. Gorgeous day. Stopped at Costco on the way home and picked up a 2.5ton floor jack for $85.

Sunday:
Took aforementioned 7 year old boy on a ~50-mile drive, including a stop to play catch at Gravelly Point under the planes departing DCA.

Up to about 840 miles on my new 2056 build. Loving this car more than ever.

Never realized the bolts that hold the gear shift were loose (and the rear one missing). I just thought that was the slop inherent in the design.

Tightened the bolts down, and wow what a difference!

Slap myself for not checking them earlier.

Installed my new rain tray from 914Rubber. Fits perfectly, and just in time now that the mid-Atlantic monsoon season (AKA "last week's weather") is over (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) Oh well, I'm sure there's more bad weather ahead this summer.

Perfect weekend for cruising the GW Parkway and sounds like a great Father's Day as well! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/first.gif)

Was a great weekend and Father's Day. I have a few local joyride routes but it's hard to beat the GW Pkwy for a beautiful cruise. Almost always see other folks doing the same. Exchanged waves with a guy in a nice older 911 yesterday.

A little dab of blue 'LockTite' on the threads helps.

Another alternative is cone screws with an integral lock-nut (from Tangerine Racing (?)

Got headlight flashed by a late model 911 on a back country road yesterday.

He recognized my 914 as a Porsche before I recognized his car as a Porsche, pretty impressive.... of course by the time my headlights came up he was by me... but I got a wave in...

Those locking cone screws are actually from JWest and they work pretty well!

Thanks for the correction on 'where to buy'. I should grab some - I'm converting my wife's '71 to a side shifter and want nothing but the best in her car.

The 'BB' could benefit from a set too, I've had to tighten mine up a couple of times already (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

looked at it, dusted it, took my sunglasses out of it this morning. would be perfect weather (72) in the morning to drive to work but that "no commuting" clause from Hagarty holds me back ( so i drove the Boxster with the top down (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sunglasses.gif)

- might need to reconsider my insurance coverage so i can drive it to work once and a while--might have to if i sell the boxster, since the wife totalled her jag i might need it a s the down payment on a newer model car(got my eye on a low milage E350 mercedes-very nice)

I use American Collectors Ins., not as restrictive as Hagerty, stated value, mileage per year is tiered, give them a call.
