I installed the engine lid seal from 914Rubber. A paint stick helps push it in place when your thumb gets sore. You have to cut it to length and this time I got lucky. I was about 1/4" short when I did this on the '72 some time back. Its better to cut it a bit long and then just trim it little by little.

Closing the lid pulls a short section of rubber off the metal seam even tho I have the lid as far to the rear as I can without scratching the trunk lid. I'll leave it for today and check it tomorrow. I may have to somehow trim the rubber.

And I just may leave the grill off. Surely it will improve airflow (okayyy...) and it makes it easy to retrieve tools left in the engine bay before blasting off on a test drive.

(The more I post the less time I have to spend out in the 97F heat! Its a hot one today.)

The grille will more than fill that gap.
The engine lid on the 'BB' hadn't been installed yet when I replaced that rubber seal ... much easier.

I span the engine to check for bangs & leaks and to build oil pressure. So far so good. However when I connected the battery I got a fizz noise from the alternator, brand new alternator!!

Next step. Fit the carbs, add fuel and see what it actually runs like.

Ran my car out of gas with the gauge showing 3/4 full. Took 15 gals to fill ‘er up. The gauge then showed full and has been acting normally. Replaced the sender last year. Checking all wiring.

Took the '73 for a ride to the local Audi dealer- the oil temp sure likes the cooler temps! Weather lately here in north Scottsdale has been near perfect!

Forgot to fill the gearbox with oil! Luckily I remembered before starting the engine.

Tried to fix some of the electrical gremlins. Partly succeeded.

Figured out my carbs and the vac pipes set up, thanks to advice on here. Also fitted the new firewall bush (friction ring) that I picked up from Porsche parts dept.

Need to charge the battery for Saturday. Saturday will be the first time I start the car.

You would have quickly realized it if you'd run it w/o oil. Sounds like a blender full of marbles. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

took the engine out. for the first time doing it, it went smoothly.

it was missing. turns out there is only 75% compression in cylinder #1 and leaking into carb. Inlet valve, valve guide?

it's coming apart on Tuesday with the guidance of a great air-cooled mechanic, Jay Kjoller who thankfully lives close by.Attached Image

Got slightly creative because I had a rotted center console and didn't want to run the hoses under the car. This is just mocked up now but things are fitting well and getting something, anything done is a good thing. I should have a roller before the snow falls and just in time to roll in the donor for the winter.Attached Image

Made a set ( and a few extras) of these laser cut Stainless Steel housing covers, aka Lager-Deckel #914 331 213 00, which attach and hold down the axle- bearing on the trailing arm. Stock is an 11gauge c/r metal stamping. My design is 3/16" thick which will give better bearing protection for HD track work with the big v8 hp on board. Attached Image

Took it up to Mort's for the bbq. Was a small turnout, that's fall for ya...

Got to drive over the Hudson on the new TappanZee bridge. Pretty cool. There was a rainbow but it doesn't really show in the pic

The wife hadn't driven her car in 6 months so I thought I would take it out to keep it from entirely drying out and causing leaks etc.

First problem was the battery was dead. I mistakenly unplugged the extention cord attached to battery tender a while back. I charged the battery.

Once charged I was going to still take it out on a drive etc. As I was backing out of drive way, my wife asks what was dripping under car. Pulled back in an discovered cracked fuel injector. Luckily I have spares in parts bin. Changed injector and went for a drive up hwy 9 to skyline. Car ran great.

Wife has been scolded for not driving car regularly.

Finished building my big 'kick as'' trailer so finally got back to the 914.
Fitted drivers side rocker panel cover with rivets @ the top,so good not having a leak down the rear from the tank suction (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) .
Started stripping down my Bosch 911E 2.4 "003" dizzy ready for machining down the body to suit my crankcase,it need turning down to 27mm which is standard early 911/T4 and type 1 size.
I don't have the use of a lathe so have a mate that will do it for me...very clever machinist (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) .
Lots of small jobs to do and a few majors but most steeps are forward and I really enjoy working on it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif) .

Fixed a broken oil temp sender wire and got it ready to take to Flagstaff for a week on Tuesday. Used 1/2 quart of oil in 2,700 miles since the last oil change...not bad.

Not my car but helped a friend start his car and break-in the cam. First time it's ran since he bought it 5 years ago. I'll get some pictures next time I see it but he had it painted Bahama yellow and it looks great. Still lots of reassembly and sorting to do but hopefully he will have it ready for Rt 66 -2018.
