Perhaps Chris or one of the other expert welders will chime in...

I'm certainly not an expert. But I've always understood that over-heating a weld joint will make the metal brittle and more prone to cracking....

Thus, you may want to stitch weld when you do the 2nd side.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) I'm a toolmaker,certainly not an expert welder, any advice would be helpful.
All though I have been told that there is not enough carbon in mild steel to harden the metal surrounding the weld. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)
