My binlaw Ric (a 914 owner from Chicago) was at Roadamerica last weekend for amerikan lemans and he ran the rookie race in HIS HOPPED UP TEENER. I thought you might appreciate his commentary:

Went to the A.L.M.S. Road America 500 yesterday...

Did the (1-hour!) track session - which was f=*&^% FRIGHTeningly intense: Every Corvette Z06 driv'in, Viagra junkie in the midwest seemed to be out there – and taking it WAYYYYY too seriously, driving like fricki'n idiots. Christ on a fucki'n bike!..It was stupidly fast and you HAD to keep moving just to stay out of trouble and to keep from getting ass-ended.

I think what happened was; They had a huge, (100+) turn out, and got greedy (didn't turn anyone away): By the time I got out on the (4-mile long) track - I was being lapped by the pace car... So the pace-car thing was almost immediately out the window as the cars that were finishing their first lap started aggressively passing the cars just getting on.

Immediately, all hell broke loose, as people just ignored the pace car, (as it got swallowed up in traffic) and all the psycho's started playing Fantasy Formula 1. I was genuinely scared...because you just couldn't let up. You either went all out or got run off the road.
I used a half a tank of gas!

It was unbelievably, bizzarly, stupid...and after the third lap THEY WOULDN'T LET YOU OFF THE TRACK!..because too many people had pulled into the pits at one time – just to get the fuck off the track. Man talk about baptism by fire! It was really freaky. I can't believe no one got hurt. (there were a couple small accidents)

One of the better descriptions of why drivers should take baby steps before getting on a track full of testoterone....

I had five years of AX, 3 of DE and I STILL almost crapped my pants when I came around to the start finish line at Willow Springs the first time.....I was in the middle of the grid and the sound of 30+ cars lighting it up with mostly straight uncorked exhaust....... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon8.gif)

I got moved on by five cars before I pulled my head out of my ass...I was able to catch them before the end and finished right where I qualified...but just barely.

When I actually do my first race I'm gonna make a point out of starting at the very back. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/burnout.gif)
