Cairo94507 has entrusted me with the customization/rebuild of his 901 for use in his 3.2 conversion. Based on desires for a street car and budget, we decided on an A/Ga/fX/X/fH set up which will lower RPM and raise shift points to better utilize the Tq of the 3.2. The only improvement would be to get a C first gear set, which would be $$$ so this should be very street-able. Another option would be to lock 1st out and use the stock F gear as 1st. Then a box that was F/O/X/fH would be a nice setup and one that I use often with the larger engines where a 4 speed is preferential.

Here is where I started to remember to take pics. Gutted the case and looked at all the parts. Cairo wants this cleaned and painted as well which I hate to do, but understand and offer (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) It takes me so long and it is hateful work. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

The side plate and intermediate plate are soaking right now. Lots of old, oily dirt and schmutz on them (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

I did clean up the guts of the stack, though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Wow (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif) my transmission is famous - kind of. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Seriously, I know my transaxle is in the best of hands and will drive and shift like new (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) once it is in the car.

I can't wait to see the progress pictures and the look of the case once it is bead-blasted (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ar15.gif) . Still not sure what finish the Doc will put on the transaxle to protect and preserve it but I trust him (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pray.gif) .

You should see the shovel the "Doc" uses when he builds in ten minutes!!!!! Throws it together like he knows what he is doing>LOL< < LOL>

He does indeed know how to build transmissions.

Mike, what kind of paint did you use on my transmission? I really like it and need to get some to paint the flange reliefs I made for the sensors.

I like the gears he selected; should capture the 3.2 torque, power range nicely.

Wow, Smitty. You must think I am big time (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) I have a $99 HF solvent tank full of kero, a used $99 blasting cabinet, and a deep sink for final wash and prep. Perhaps when I move to a more permanent duty station and set up a shop for real, then I would do it.

I figured making helpfull suggestions would add to my street creds and get me a future discount when my rear end needs servicing - wait that sounds really bad. When my tranny needs work, crap he's going to be pissed now also. Should my Sideshift needs work - forget it, nevermind, nothing to see here, please move along.

I know I had one for doing NDT - Heated, Ultrasonic with Tri 1,1,1 - Awesome until California decieded it was bad. I found out yesterday that we can't order 99% pure alcohol without a permit. I use it to clean Fiber Optic Connectors before testing them. I need to move - anyone need a semi-useful body - will clean car parts for room and board. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

you may not want to lock out the stock first gear. that gear is handy in parking lots for creeping around. I still use first in my six, for that purpose. 2nd gear just wont allow me to go slow enough in parking lots. It is also useful when the engine is cold and you need to go slow on a engine that is trying to warm up on a high idle.

just use foot control and dont stomp on it in first if you got a powerful motor, but it sure is nice in the parking lot.

Ape914 - Thanks for the thoughts. The Doc and I traded emails and talked about this exact thing yesterday. I never really considered before that I have a steep driveway so in the end it looks like the stock 1st gear remains so I will be able to get in my driveway and up the ramps to my lift where the six will snooze when not being driven.

I have to admit it's cool seeing my transaxle being built- even if it is only in pictures.

I have a long steep driveway but the doc convinced me to bag 1st. He said that's what all the real men and 930's have. I guess I just have to race it like a hill climb. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)


I also didn't feel like spending the extra 400+ for new 1st gear parts.


And I get to use a cool 4 speed shift knob.
