Eric, I agree that it's good practice IF YOU HAVE THE TOOLS to fully seat the races before assembly. However, I disagree they HAVE to be, since they can be finally seated during assembly, using the procedure I outlined.
I haven't read any of the official Porsche manuals, as I don't have them, and haven't even seen them. Greasing the hub makes no sense to me. Manuals have been wrong before, and so have I. The manual and I will have to agree to disagree on this one. If it's the Haynes manual that states this (don't have my copy handy), well, there's a reason the Mini community refers to it as the Haynes Book of Lies. I don't generally take them as the last word on anything. Doesn't mean my copies aren't well-thumbed, though (or that I don't have lots of them, nearly one for every car I've ever had). |

Mr. Haynes agreed with Eric. But I agree with the Mini folks regarding his/their competence.
I used to talk to my mechanic in LA about this. This one instance comes to mind: Replacing front shock: Haynes-remove a buncha crap takes 3 1/2 hours (I'm condensing here) Mechanic-push the shock down take out insert, put in new. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) Mark, this is whitey. He's finally getting his new shoes put on. Hopefully his new sways, too. I have to get motivated to get this thing done. Tomorrow was gonna be rears day, but that aint gonna happen unless everything goes as hoped for. |
