I'm afraid I'm going to have to switch from builder to spectator. 914 piggy bank got raided again by 'other priorities'. I swear this whole 'food' thing is getting very inconvenient... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Still plan on stopping by in Ol' Yeller to share space with the boys at Scotty's. Should be a great day for a drive! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

Thank you Scotty (for hosting) and Mike (for the clinic). It was VERY informative and worth the money/effort. For those who only did the one day clinic I have to tell you that the second day was even better. Having experience rebuilding the transmission from the first day (plus help cleaning parts...thanks, Phil) made my second transmission rebuild on Sunday MUCH faster and I felt much more confident.

I learned a LOT and feel like I have a much better understanding about what is going on in the transmission. The extensive amount of damage in my third transmission (which is now a parts box) shows the importance of keeping things aligned and having good shift bushings. I will be changing ALL questionable shift bushings in my cars.

It was great meeting other 914world members. Chris helped me a lot on Saturday rebuilding my first transmission and, as a bonus, Chris sold me his beautiful '75 that is now safely home in SC. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif)

p.s. Chris...I did remember the starting procedure!!!!!

Seriously, anyone who is thinking about rebuilding a trans, or installing custom gears should attend one of these clinics. They are fun, informative, and cheap.

How long will it take?- Doc likes to keep everyone moving at the same pace, so figure around 8 hrs for the first time. However if you gotta go it can be done in @4.5 hrs.

Why should you go? I always was nervous about breaking into a trans even though I have been rebuilding engines, heads, and working on cars for over 40 yrs (the doc called me old). My fears were I would have a table full of parts and not be able to assemble them- Sort of like this-
(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads/post-11106-1334455454_thumb.jpg)

But the doc walked us through everything and supplied the critical tools to get it all done!

Attached Image

What does it cost?- Depends on the condition of your parts. no way to tell until you get in there. But it's going to be cheaper than sending the box to someone else to rebuild.
Here is what it cost me-
Tuition- 300$
Gasket kit @30$
H gear off Ebay - 150$
Paint- 5$
Gas to drive to the clinic- 65$
5$ to Scotty for pizza.

My first gear slider was toast but as I am putting in a V8 I really have no need for it. However these slider's add up - I think I overheard the Doc say 550$ for a first gear slider.

The Doc will look at your syncros and sort them from best to worse and you install them on the gears that get used the most- first, second, third. And the not so good ones on 4th and fifth. You may need to buy a syrncro or two. Also the Doc will change teeth on the gears and this may cost you.
The Doc will flip gears for you or install different sets.

He doesn't charge anything for insults.

What to bring- 10,13,14,19mm sockets and ratchet, one extension.
Table. Your beverages of choice

Following are helpful but were provided-
Hammer, punch, chisel, rags, cleaning solvent, seal puller.
Doc provided all the special tools.

So when you are all done- You have a really decent transmission-

And you get this really nice Certificate-

Thanks Doc! Thanks Scotty! ( are you Irish or from Hawaii? or maybe an Irishman from Hawaii?).

Here is billh1963! If you look close you will see his eyes are a bit glazed over, the effects of having 3the tranny cases and making sense of all those gears! And all the brake cleaner! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif)

Reassembly went quick,! With doc's help.
We had an interesting bunch! Several engineers, a D.C.(chiropractor-me), a retired professor(PHD),
And the 914 restoration guru, the phd of body work Scotty B himself!
And all getting instruction from the evil tranny Doc! Also a U.S. marine, Chris and his son Alex, great to see the next generation getting involved!
Thanks Mike!
and several other guys came and helped, watched etc. Really enjoyed meeting you all!

And of course some great barbecue!

The brake cleaner fumes were intense. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

One word of advice.....if you are in a clinic with Phil W and your can of brake cleaner is missing, then just find where Phil is sitting....your missing item will be there.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif)

The starter in Matt's car died so Evil and Scotty swapped it out.

Matt still thought he was on the golf course so he dressed the part...
