QUOTE(seanery @ Sep 16 2004, 12:35 PM) I have never done it....I'm afraid...I've seen wavy cars, mostly 911s. My buddy Paul had 930 flares welded onto his 75 Carrera (SC body) by kevin in Van Nuys area. He spot welded them and the result is fabulous...lemme see if I have a pic or two around... ive been to kevins. he had a 911 that i got the suspension off of. nice guy. |

Hey 9xauto , the flares (flear is a '60s bubble gum) go on good with a MIG welder with a .030 wire. You will not need to use the big shop type .035 wire spool. Use a mig with an external tank, as the types with flux built into the wire won't give you good consistent welds.
The shop that did mine used a heliarc (overkill), and then leaded and worked the seams to perfection. His work was 99.9 % perfect...and I've never undercoated the under sides of the flares, so I show his work off at shows ! I've seen some under sides of flares (most recently at GAF Ventura) that were totally unfinished and heavily oversprayed, most likely to disguise the unfinished work (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) . Do your 914 up right...craftsmanship required on both sides ! MF |

My Stealth bomber is all velcroed. That way I can land, rent a car, put it in the trunk and hide it from the Ruskys. <_<

Thank you to all participants! The information I've received is better than buying a book. And yes I'm an asshole for misspelling FLARES. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif)

Here's a couple of pics of mine going on. I have a TIG welder and really think that's the way to go. You have full control. Cut carefully, weld slowly.

There is a weld wire called "Easy Grind" specifically made for welding auto sheet metal. It is "softer" than your normal 6000/7000 serise weld metal. ....also available in .025 dia.
A buddy got me some from a welding supply house. Wurks good. He kept the spool, but now that I have a welding machine, I'm gonna get it back. |

Here is how I welded my flares on to my 914. Take the flares and place them over the original quarter panel. After lining up the flare on the body drill holes for sheet metal screws to attach the flares to the body. Drill the holes about 1/4 inch from the edge of the flare which will also drill holes into the body. This will hold the flare in the correct position to the body. Now cut both the flare and body with an air saw about 1/8 inch from the edge of the flare. You will cut both the flare and body at this point and have a perfect "jigsaw" effect. You then go and "spot" weld the flare to the body. It is quite easy. The only thing that makes it tough is the lip on the bottom of the flares and the body. You need to remove the right angle lip on the body so the flare "butts" up correctly when you line up the flares on the body. Sorry no pictures.

Hey 9Xauto, When you're all done hangin the flares don't be alarmed if the L & R rocker panels are not exactly matching up to your new fenders (down at the bottom corners). Due to variations in fenders, bodywork and heat during welding, I've found that the side rockers usually need to be cut and re-worked to the proper length. Since most GT rockers are fibreglass it's a simple deal. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

914RS.......Are they AA flares or factory GTs? I'm curious how you made the bottoms fit?
