So I am planning to disassemble my 73 sideshift trans today. However, my 914 (and 914 shop manual) are at my dads house in Santa Barbara. I found this tech article on 901 transaxle dis-assembly over at pelican:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/9...01_synchros.htm Any opinions on whether or not this should be sufficient instruction? What is different on a sideshift trans from the 911 box used in this article? The San Diego library has a couple of 914 shop manuals, but of course they aren't open on Saturday. Andrew |

Very close but I would refer to Dr Evil's tech pages as well. The shift lever is the main difference. You will need special tools to make things easier. I think Dr. Evil rents them now.

Are the special tools the syncro hub remover and that plastic shaft alignment tool referenced in the pelican article? I have access to a machine shop, so I was thinking I would make those tools to save some money. If anyone has dimensions for them, or even better a CAD model, I would really appreciate it.
Where can I find Dr. Evil's tech pages? Andrew |

The alignment tool is cheap <$50. You could make one if you know the exact dimensions, but I think you will spend more time and $ than just buying one.
Dr Evil has a extra long modified socket and shaft wrench (splined for the input shaft) as well as the alignment tool. His custom tools make it very easy to pull apart and rebuild. I think he will rent to you for under $50. PM him. What is your time worth? |

Dr. Evil
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=534 I'm sure he will chime in on this thread when he see's it. His tech pages are linked to his signature whenever he posts. |

Thanks for posting stuff up, Mike.
The alignment tool is $19 at Pelican. I have bought rather than make at that price. I would not endeavor to rebuild a transmission without knowing what you are doing either by viewing, or reading. You will need the book at least to keep from mucking the whole thing up. |
