so, i have been shopping for some wide tires to go with the 8" x 16 and 9" x 16 rims i just bought (thanks d914 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pray.gif) ) and it seems all but impossible to find anything decent and wide ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

anyone have any leads on where to buy a set of:

245/45 x 16 and 285/40 x 16

brand doesn't matter, as long as they are DOT legal and have any kind of decent thread pattern and a speed rating of above 80 mph ...

this is very frustrating!

Unfortunately I think it will get harder and harder to find big or strange tires in the 15 - 16" sizes. Most of the modern high-performance cars as well as wild racecars are running 17's and 18's (or bigger). Fortunately certain smaller sizes, i.e. 911 and Miata flavors, are extremely popular in 15's and 16's and not likely to go away anytime soon.

I think the widest ive seen are the Kuhmos at 265/40/16.

I think you are going to be "stuck" with running 255's on the 9's.......tirerack.com lists a bunch in that size

The 245/45x16 will be easy to find. That's a fairly common size. It's those 285's you're going to have a tough time with.

i've already got a set of GoodYear R250 slicks for AX, so, no, these will be for daily driving ...

however, i wouldn't mind performance/road racing tires for the street as long as they're DOT approved.
right now, i'm pretty much ready to take anything in 285/40 i can get my hands on ...

aha!

looks like HOOSIER makes a DOT legal tire in P275/45ZR-16 as well as P245/45ZR-16 !!!

probably don't want to drive that in the rain tho ...

Dooooood... for 8 an 9J wheels, get 225 and 245 tires

245 will fit on an 8, but will give you just as much grip as a 225 (because a 225 fits better)
285 is waaaaay to wide for a 9J wheel

Agree. Have 8.5 Centerlines 15's on Moby with 245/50 fronts and 265/50 rears. Looks wild, but too much tire for car. Hard to balance tires to car. 225's would probably ride and handle better.

If they're for the street, then, your choices are indeed super limited. Never thought we'd see the day when 15 and now 16 (!) inch tire choices are disappearing. That means it will happen to 17s next, and probably in not too many more years...

I do agree with the above, tho'. If it's not for the edge in competition terms, 225s and 245s (or 255s) are the way to go. Even at 225, that thing is gonna be TOUGH to steer.

But, if you're just going for a bad-ass look, please ignore my thoughts! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)

Just went to Tire Rack....they don't seem to have a listing for 245/45/16 in Kumhos anymore....WTF? That's what I use on three of my cars....
