there are 2 916's in new jersey. one is black and is in the atlantic city area and one silver and is in the englewood area, these are both owned by long time owners. there are also sevral m471 cars in nj, 5 that i know of. 1 sits in dover out in a car lot as we speak right now(and yes i can tell a real one from a fake)

The only way to be somewhat sure that they are factory M471's is to verify the VIN numbers are on the infamous list from Porsche. I find it hard to believe there is a factory M471 sitting in a car lot in Dover New Jersey. Please prove I'm wrong. Would you be able to find out what the VIN number is and let us know? I would be very interested in that car.

The yellow 916 looks like the car that was featured in an old issue of Porsche and Volkswagon magazine, which later became European Car magazine. If so, it was in the Chandler collection at one time, along with a lot of other cool Porsches..

That's it.

Anyway, in the lot with these other cars was a 914 that I thought was just another 914...that is until I saw the poster next to it that indicated that it was one of two 916's in the U.S. It was really cool...other than the puke brown plaid interior. The steel top with rain gutters was really nifty. Check out the pics.

I must of passed it twice before I realized what it was. The interior is what set me off. "Hey that dosen't look normal, Wait! Ohhh.." (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

It's been a good year.. I've got to see up close two Factory Protoype 914 cars up close. I'd say not everyone gets to do that often..

Great pictures! Did you get a closeups of the roof? (The kind that someone could use as a guide for converting a 914 to a solid roof.)

what you also don't realize is that these cars were often dumped to dealers in the northeast, as porsche/audi was based in englewood, alot of these wound up in the hands of employees of the distributer(especially worldwide) I work in the automotive business, my family sold vw the property for the headquaters in englewood. don't ever discount what is around in the nj/ny/ct area. I would bet that these were the biggest market for porsche in that era, califonia has more cars now because they survive out there, in the north east they rotted out almost on the delare lots. interestingly, a lot of spiders are in the same area. you have to understand that this area was the wealthiest(and probably still is) in the nation, hence more exotics are sold. also, when the privately owned vw/audi /porsche distributer went out in the mid 90's(worldwide imports, they were the only privatley held distributer of these in the world) they cleaned out the wharehouse in orangeburg ny, they had all kinds of parts and training vehicles, a new 70 914 included, all of which became the property of vw and were destroyed...

I agree there is a lot of nice cars in the NE. I'm from NJ. I bought my first Porsche new in NJ back in the early 70's. Although over the years many factory euro M471's made it to our shores, initially only 6 factory M471 optioned cars were shipped to the US and I know the fate of each of these cars. As far as I know, there are only 49 documented 914-6's with either the GT option and/or the M471 option. All but one of the 49 are listed on the infamous list from Porsche. VIN numbers and or documentation from Porsche are the only proof they came from the factory with the M471 option.

By the way Nick, I see you live in Franklin. I used to live in Newton and then built a home off Beaver Run Road in Hamburg. At the time I worked for CONTEL in Sussex. Bought my first Porsche from Newton PA Intercar. How are things in my old stomping ground? I moved from NJ to Atlanta in 1983 and haven't been back since. Obviously I live in Tampa now.

I talked to Mike Daino this morning. He works at the place in Dover, NJ. He said the car that Nick was referring to in a customers car that owner has been bringing to them for service for many years. He said that it has been at their business for a couple of days for a tune-up. This is one of the 6 US cars that most of us know about. I've know of this car for about 15 years. Now, what about the other 4 cars? Any details/leads on them?

There was rumors from a earlier thread that there was a factory 914-8 car in the NE also. Someone posted that some guy bought it for his daughter, or something....

Fall time...the leaves are starting to come off, time to drive back roads and look what's out there. That's how I found the M471 car.

Bruce,

I think that was a letter written to Excellence. The guy didn't have any proof, just said that his sister or daughter had one, or something. Sounded pretty sketchy to me.

It's amazing what you can find out on the prairies when the leaves start to fall, isn't it.
