I have an idea for a simple cover for the GT engine lid user to use when car is parked outside and the forcast calls for rain. I don't use a raintray, not sure anyone does that has a GT engine lid. Anyway I scurried outside this Saturday just before it started to pour and placed plastic trash bags on my engine lid to keep the electronics dry so I could work on timing Sunday without dampness. I started thinking that it'd be nice to have a custom water repelent vinyl cover made for this area. It could be made just slightly larger than the entire engine lid and have magnets sewn into each of the four sides. It could be kept folded up in the trunk and used in emergencies or when you're uncertain of the weather (while shopping, etc.). Actually might be convenient for either of the engine lids in lieu of the rain tray. It'd have to be removed before driving but keeping the electricals dry might keep you from getting stranded with a motor that wouldn't start..I'm thinking simple black with black welting around the edge. Anyone here have sewing skills?

might check out Perry Kieh's 914 Umbrella cover. If the material is right it should do the trick and is already available.

I thought about those umbrella covers (and I'd like to have one) but I think It would take longer to put on than what I have in mind.

kind of defeats the purpose of a GT lid, doesn't it? everything (and i mean *EVERYTHING*) can be easily made water-tight, except those metal-mesh air cleaners i have on the carbs.
i have been looking for a rain-shield for those (like on the /6 carbs) ...

i have hosed down my engine comp a few times now, no problems.

get caps for the battery terminals, make sure all your important connectors have rubber boots, tape off any other obvious electrical connections (wire extensions etc.) get a good cover for the relay board. my car has been parked in the rain for 2 (CA winter) seasons like this with no problems what-so-ever. i don't have a garage, so the car has to sit outside all the time (i had the stock air-cleaner on the D-Jet).

all i need to find now is the carb-rainshields (or a good FI system (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ) ...

go to your local sign shop and get a sheet of All-Mag that will cover the engine lid. Then just stick it to the inside of the rear deck lid when not in use. It will keep the rain out, and it won't blow off in the wind.

I did this when I had carbs on the 2.0. If I didn't it would hydraulically lock from the rain.

My fiberglass guy and I are making a new tray for my 914 DTM. We could change it easily if someone would send me a sample to go from..

It doesn't take long to put on my cover, unless it's windy. It also solves the weather seal leak on the side glass to roof seal.

Hi-Ho-Silber had one of Perry's umbrella covers on a run we took. It goes on and off in no time, great protection for the 30+ year old interior, takes up almost no room when stowed in the trunk, and was VERY well made. It's on my "gonna get" list Perry! Now, if I can just get one of those with clear plastic in the front and rear I won't have to worry about ever replacing the my roof weather stripping. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

I've actually had a few guys want to know if they could drive the car with the cover on! About as well as Ray Charles could've.....

Clay, that All-Mag is a good idea.. I'll probably get some of that for the time being. Actually two pieces of All-Mag sewn into a water repelant nylon/vinyl cover, so that it would fold closed like a book might work great and look better than just plain old All-Mag..add a silk screened crest or 914Club logo and it'd be really nice.

SirAndy, I'd been meaning to ask if anyone sold rain shields for the 2 Webber setup..I take it from you're post that we're out of luck on that one? I'm suprised no one has made them out of carbon fiber yet. And you reminded me too that I have to start looking for a GOOD relay board cover.

Yeah PK, I think that umbrella is on my Christmas wish list..

hats hats hats, i couldnt belive the response i recieved when i asked about carb hats.here is a photo of the plug,that is going to be polished and sent over to our glass shop to be tooled.we will be releasing this part in carbon fiber as well.
