For those of you who are more frugal. I saw a pair of GLAD or TUPPERWARE containers that had been turned upside down and placed on the top of the air filter on a pair of Weber carb. Works just like the Rainshields at a fraction of the cost. ANd they can be easily replaced if needed.

Can anyone here tell me why they are running a GT engine lid?

Can anyone tell me why the factory did (no speculation.. I'm looking for hard facts)

Ha! I just came in from slipping my GT lid back on. Here are some of my reasons.

Foremost, I like the way it looks. Both from a distance and up close.

I like being able to see the engine thru the mesh. At this point, I've got a LOT of sweat equity in my engine and engine bay and I enjoy getting a look at it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

The engine noises are louder when I'm driving. That's another thing I like. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I'd love to hear some hard facts on the GT also. But since we don't have any, I just have to speculate. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) I think it may have been an effort to afford more air, and cooler air, for the engine and carbs... with the added bonus of reducing a few pounds in weight.

Maybe some day we'll find out.

Actually looking at the 911's they are very restricted on the amount of open area at the engine lid. Plus they have AC condnesors filling up that space. They are very restricted. I would bet that you could leave only the two small side slots open on a 914 4 or 6 and close the opening in the engine lid itself. Or if you want you could put a piece of clear plexiglass over it, you can see you motor, and not suffer any overheating problems.

Craig, I have also used aluminum bread loaf baking pans in the past. Those are pretty thrifty too. Some times they are packaged in pairs. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Makes one wonder. Could be a teener owner working in packaging and marketing? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

That's right. My old 69 911E had a condenser mounted in the grill. I removed the entire AC before spring was over. That's not as good a move in a coup as it is in a targa. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I'm just typing.

Actually I felt that with all of that glass in the back my 73 Targa was warmer than any of my 73 911 coupes.

My car already had a nice GT lid when I bought it but I'd probably want one even if it didn't because like someone else mentioned..it looks cool to be able to see the engine through it. Besides it may help keep the summer temps down and I NOW plan to use All-Mag in the winter months maybe even while driving to regulate the engine warming on my short commute to work. I think this is a good idea because the GT lid is still there when you want it or need it. I see the rainshields as a necessity though if no raintray is being used.

Yeah, but it is in the airstream that goes over the car, so air is forced in there
No such thing on a 914...

I've always thought that Chuxter's ideas were great on that site. Wonder how he made that scoop for the fresh air. Anyone else have any ideas on how to get air into the engine bay?

This may be a bit extreme, but years ago when I was in the
Army Reserves in Milwaukee, one of the officers had a Fiero
GT with a F1 style snorkel mounted to his engine grill that rose above the roofline. Not sure how effective it was, but it looked
cool and fit well with the car.

Morph...

Those look great, now quick, go put them on a driver, and let it sit under your sprinkler all night...if the car still starts in the morning...SUCCESS!

Had that happen once, hopefully never again, pain in the ass!
