Help me find the engine number on my car. Need to confirm what I have (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) It is a '71 but was told that it had a 2.0 in it that came out of a '74. But I have no idea of where to look to find the engine number.

On a 1.7/1.8 case there are two flat ribs on the top of the case that point towards the flywheel (almost like a V). The number is stamped in the rib on the pass side.

On 2.0 cases, it is on a flat area between the oil filler and fan housing.

It is possible to build a 2.0 from the 1.7/1.8 case by using the 2.0 crank and rods. No way to tell from the outside.

The 1.7/1.8 heads have 4 studs that hold down the intake runners. The real 2.0 has 3 studs.

If you can find no numbers, it could be a rebuilt that they ground the numbers off or a replacement case.

Thanks for the info, found it. Now the bad news, it is a "W" engine. So I have a 1.7. Was sold to me as having a '74 2.0 engine.

Live and learn.

Check the studs. Thats the important part. If you have 2.0L heads (3 intake studs), he might have done a rebuild with 94mm pistons and converted it to a 2.0 with a 1.7 case.
