After removing the sail panel vinyl and aluminum trim pieces I am considering grinding off the lip that holds on the aluminum behind the sail panel. Has anyone else done this? I am not crazy about the vinyl or the aluminum and instead of powder coated them black, I would rather delete them. But, that leaves me with that lip that is normally hidden behind the aluminum trim.
If anyone has done this, can you please attach pics?

There was an article a few months back in Excellence about a guy that did that. It was a red 75 914, I believe. I don't have any pictures off hand, sorry.

That lip is structural! it's where all the pieces of the targa bar are spot welded together. If you cut it off, you'd have to weld the bits back together. Do-able, but not easy.

That must be why most of the 916s I've seen have the trim, but no sail panel vinyl. Probably was too much work.

You can always take the aluminum trim pieces and have them powdercoated in a contrasting color.

Better yet anodise them the same color as your paint.

Like this one. It belongs to John Takehara, a lurker here that attends the windy breakfast. Hi John (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wavey.gif)
