Connected with Perry who is going to build me a new MFI harness. Checked the trannie internals over and it looks good. Pulled the induction and shroud off to clean the burned accumulated oil from a small breather leak. Shroud was tired with typical cracks and wear. Spent some time with repairs. Before...

BTW, Perry suggested I might look for "double pole sender for both warning light and a gauge too". Right now as you can see in the top photo, I have the single pole sender for the gauge. If someone has a double, please send me a PM

In the mean time I married some 914-6 and 911 MFI tin to create a cover for the right rear of the engine to protect the belt.

Harness arrived, looks great and Perry was very helpful. Had a tough time mating the trannie and 2.4. Thought I had the clutch disc positioned correctly but just wasn't going in. Loosened the PP and centered it again and bingo. Finished up the right side tin modified for the MFI and decided to move the 6 to the bay with the lift. In the process my steering locked and refused to unlock. Not even sure I knew it was locking steering?
Grabbed the key and tried to unlock the steering by turning the key and key won't move in the ignition. Wonder if my ignition just crapped itself...suggestions welcome. Progress so far... ![]() |

Thanks Mark...thought I had done that. My 74 911 does that once in a while. Anyway I gave it a go, and voila! Wheel freed up. I'm thinking there may some debris in the switch, so maybe some WD 40 would be productive. At least now I don't need to worry about dismantling the steering/ignition switch.

At least now I don't need to worry about dismantling the steering/ignition switch. there is a product sold at locksmiths.. .probably also on line Houdinni its a lubricant for locks, that doesn't attract dust in the way WD40 does. its a great product. I now use it on all of my cars once a year or so. works wonderfully. |

Had a deadline ...today, to get the engine installed. Parts PDF was sort of helpful with hardware ID, but friends on the forum really helped. Once I was able to narrow down all the necessary bits that my shop trolls had almost successfully hidden...I went to work.

Part of my issue with the sail panels and targa bar...was that I was too stubborn to buy new aluminum trim. Mine wasn't broken, but it was very scratched and dinged. I also didn't realize that it was anodized. So when I hammered out the dings and sanded and filed out the scratches, they wouldn't polish up to match the original anodizing. It was at that point that I realized I needed to sand all the anodizing off completely and build the finish back up by polishing. My polishing wheel on my grinder wasn't doing the trick so I ordered a hand held polishing tool and started with 120 and worked my way up to 10,000 grit with various compounds. I'm almost there...but it has been a PIA. Pics forthcoming to show the trim at present...wish I had taken more "before" pics.

Congratulations on getting the engine/transaxle back where they belong. I know that feels great. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) You're getting there. A few hours a day and you'll get it all wrapped up.

Just realized that while I have new stainless steel lines in the tunnel, I also have new low pressure lines from the tank fittings to the tunnel lines. Am I going to have to pull the tank to access those lower fittings? And what size ID high pressure fuel lines will I need and does anyone know approximately how many feet I will be needing?

Yes, you will have to pull the tank. The access hole lets you get the lines to the tank but they must already be on the tunnel line. Some people cut just enough to reach the tank, others leave enough to lift the tank from the car with the lines attached. The excess stays coiled under the tank.
The tank can be removed without removing the trunk lid. |
