Let's face it. Only in the 70's would a car come in so many wacky, crazy outrageous colors! The 914 was BY FAR no exception. Which are your favorite and least favorite of the 914 rainbow? The 914 came in 37 DIFFERENT COLORS (Actually 40, but 3 were the same color later renamed)! With as many as 14 OPTIONS A YEAR! I can’t think of ANY car that came in so many color selections! And let's face it - part of the appearance appeal of the 914 was the fact that it came in some really wacky colors. Having a 914 in a "normal" color almost just doesn't fit. For such a funky looking car, it's got to have a funky looking color!

With such an extensive variety of color selections, most of which you won’t find even remotely close to nowadays, which colors are your favorites - and least favorites? Post some good pics of 914s in your favorite colors - especially if it's yours! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/first.gif)

There are a handful of colors that came on the 914 that I think are really cool. I can’t pick just one, so here are my absolute favorites and least favorites:

FAVORITES:
- Anacona Blue Metallic - Probably my favorite color on the 914. I think it’s a GORGEOUS color for the car. Nicely sets off all the lights, and great contrast with the chrome and black trim.
- Signal Orange - Too obvious? Well, there’s an obvious reason why! BAD-ASS!
- Signal Yellow - FRESH!
- Saturn Yellow / Chrome Yellow - Bright and SUNNY!
- Adriatic Blue - Rich blue with nice contrast to the black trim.
- Gemini Blue Metallic - Frosty blue with a nice hue.
- Scarlet Red - Maybe I’m a bit biased because I have a ‘75 in Scarlet Red, but if you’re going to go red, go RED!
- Creamsicle - Okay, I’ll be honest. I wasn’t nuts over Light Ivory, which I guess is probably one of the most popular colors for a 914. It’s nice, but I prefer a bold color on the 914. I always thought white was just too plain for such a car. Oddly enough, I’m a huge white fan and wear a LOT of white (head to toe) and I absolutely LOVE the factory white leatherette interior on a 914! My Scarlet Red ‘75 came in the rare white interior. Unfortunately the previous owner stupidly had it dyed black. However, now that I am the owner of an LE Creamsicle, I’m adjusting to the Light Ivory. Especially with the Phoenix Red accents setting it off, making it even more funky. So my taste for the Light Ivory has become more appealing.

LEAST FAVORITES:
- Red Metallic - Not a fan. If you’re going to go red, don’t half-ass it. Just doesn’t stand out enough.
- Olympic Blue - Nice color, but too weak for the 914. Don’t like the way it sets off the orange day running lights and side markers either. Go bolder if going blue. If you prefer a lighter blue, then make it Laguna Blue.
- Willow Green - AKA Projectile Green.
- Berber Yellow - AKA Projectile Yellow
- Copper Metallic - Eh.
- Black - I know a very popular color for the 914, but I don’t think black really appeals to the fun, funky and odd shape, lines and personality of the 914. It’s too serious of a color for it. I also think black hides a lot of the curves and lines of the car. No bueno.

Semigloss black. The bigger the engine, the less gloss.

Gold was pretty rare! Not too many of those! By aubergine, I presume you mean Malaga Red?

No, I mean aubergine, as in purple. swood's old car with polished fuchs looked killer. I'll have to see if I can find a pic. It's been a lot of years if memory serves me.

Here we are...

Here's my Scarlet Red 1975 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif)

I also had a Summer Yellow 1974, but it was a real (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stromberg.gif) car and not my favorite yellow (prefer Signal Yellow and Saturn Yellow aka Chrome Yellow). So never mind. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

I thought my conservative engineer Dad was nuts to have paid an extra$209 for a custom color Delphi Green in 1973, and Mom immediately named it "urine yellow!" But now I've developed an appreciation that other drivers have a much better ability to see little ol' me in roads choked with big SUV's these days! There was a guy in these parts that was trying to sell a super low mileage Berber Yellow '75 2.0. The price was way too high, but I thought one of the main problems with the car was the unappealing color.
