I'll echo the "all due respect" and say that 914 prices mentioned herein and paint job prices herein seem to be from a past decade (or two). Sounds like you're looking for a $10,000 914 for $4,000. Times have changed.

Yes times have changed. Now, name one person on this board who would not like a $10,000 914 for $4000. I did not say all I had was $4k to spend. But I've been in the collector car market longer than some of you have been on the planet. Most, not all, but most people think they have gods gift to humanity in THEIR car. It's the best, rarest, rust free, most optioned, etc car that was ever made. It might be a $4000 car and they're asking $10,000 for it. In their minds it's worth it. From what I've seen so far, its far from reality. WHEN I see a $10,000 914, it will probably be worth it, because I know what a great car is and how it should be presented. I might not know everything about 914, but I've been following this and other boards for quite some time. I don't want crap and I won't buy crap. If it has rust, I dont want it. Engine work, nope. I'm going to keep looking for the car I want for the price I'll pay. They're out there. PS, my buddy owns a paint shop, so my prices are much less than retail. Now, after all of that, I'll get back to looking. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Perhaps I am naive, but if I were a successful classic car trader, and I was looking for a specific model, I would not post on that model's most popular website that everyone here overvalues their cars.

If I were such a successful buyer/seller of cars, I might not want to alienate an entire group of people by naming my thread "Looked at my 1st 914, wow, disapointted." Even if you spelled disapointted correctly, it does not sway the masses here that our cars are overvalued.

These cars have been under-valued for years, and those of us who were lucky enough to appreciate them when they weren't popular now have classics on their hands. I will never sell mine, but if I had to, it would be to someone here who would appreciate it, not some JO like you, looking down your nose at our cars while still wanting in on the game.

I agree. I have a nice 914 up for sale (only because I just bought a Creamsicle) and have it reasonably priced at 10.5K (down from 11.9K). Some guy on Craigslist offered me 3K and actually was arguing with me that they're not worth more than that. I told him I spent more than that on the engine rebuild. These cars are grossly underpriced. Hell, the NADA on an excellent one is $22K. Unless anybody here thinks that a nice, rebuilt 914 with a nice interior and a few minor flaws from being a daily driver isn't worth 10.5K then I think they need to re-evaluate the worth of these cars. They don't make 'em anymore, guys. And a lot of them are scrap now.

Anyone who has ever actually driven one knows that these cars are a bargain at twice the price.

Name me a street legal car that's more fun than a 914 that's even close to the price range. I'll go out on a limb and say "There isn't one."

This is the most fun you can have on four wheels for less than $10K. In order to have more fun on wheels, you're looking at a very pricey car indeed. (Either that, or get something with a built-in bed that also comes with a supermodel. That's fun, too. Probably a lot more than $10K, though. For most of us at least.)

I work in fashion so I can hook you up with a 10.5K 914 with models included! What a bargain! Lol (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

So you saw your first car and didn't like it, thought it overpriced and needed too much work. Fine, if you're a classic car collector you've experienced that a hundred times or more, just like the rest of us. Nothing new and no big deal. so now on to number two, put what you've learned to work, learning as you go. Just like the rest of us.

I would venture that maybe an s2000 would come close in the fun department. But it has no character compared to our cars.

Well bigkensteele, you really have me wrong. 1. I never said I was a "successful classic car trader", only that I've been in the car hobby for a long time. 2. I NEVER said "everyone HERE overvalues their cars". That was meant for the entire collector car hobby. Almost everyone I met over the years THINKS their cars are worth more, nothing wrong with that. (for example, look at the rare 914 S for sale tread) As my title said, yes, spelled wrong, I was dissapointed with what I saw. I'm just getting back into this mark, and I was expecting something else. I had no idea they had gone up so much. I hope you never sell your car, but to call me a " JO, looking down my nose at all of you", is unwarrented. You seem to imply that "the game" is closed to anyone else now, sorry about that". When I find a car, with some members here helping me, I'll be glad to stand on the sidelines rooting for the rest. I've done that with all the cars I've owned. I always sell them better then when I bought them, and I'm not a flipper. I like all cars.

Let's pull it back a tad here gang.

We sometimes don't realize how our words can be utilized if they are not coming out of our mouth. I'm a big one for that. Many don't know my tongue in cheek style. It seems like I was misinterpreted when I added my point about values... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

The tread title can be a little abrasive for a 914 guy, especially when one is describing what we've been seeing as a $4k car for... well, $4k. That said, most here seem to be trying to help.

I think you can find it if you keep looking. As others have posted here, they're out there. An honest "Good Luck" and "Carry On" is in order.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) Gaspump. It's always nice to put a name in your signature so we know who we're talking to (yelling at, slandering, etc.) and who's talking to (yelling at, slandering, etc.) us. We're happy you're an experienced and knowledgeable guy. There's a bunch more here so, maybe you'll decide to fit in. I've owned 914's for over 30 years and there's a ton of guys here who simply put me to shame with their experience with these cars.

Relax. Join the crowd and have fun.

Well bigkensteele, you really have me wrong.

My apologies. I guess I read you the wrong way. I hope you find a nice car that works for you. I have owned a 911, a couple of BMWs, and recently drove my buddy's Maserati. All great cars, but none of them have ever plastered a grin on my face the way the 914 does when I am out in it.

Good luck.

Remember when you could buy a solid, original paint, 2.0 914 with FI still intact and functional for $2500? Those days are long gone too.

Yup - I bought my 73 2.0 for $2,300. Of course then I put about $12K more into it over a few years, then sold it for $8K... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

Even at that time (2001-ish) I believe its fairly nice Glasurit paint job was $2,500. And that was just for the paint job itself - bodywork, trim, rubber, replating, carpet, etc. was on top of that.

Fast-forward to today, I won't tell you how much the body and paint work was on my current car in 2011 but suffice to say, a LOT more than in 2001...
