i finally get to take all the f'in smog crap off of my car. one thing i'm not sure of though is the charcoal canister. can i just take it off? if i get rid of it, how should i vent the tank?
i hate having that big canister in there flopping around. is still have the stock d-jet on the 2.0. already got rid of the smog pump, egr valve, air tube, etc.. any idea's? thanks! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

The charcoal cannister does not rob any power and keeps the driver/passenger cabin "fuel scent free", but does nothing for the other scents (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon8.gif)

Just hook up the hoses as they should be - one to the blower housing and one to the air cleaner and enjoy "fresh air scent"driving (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol2.gif)

for those of you guys keeping the charcoal canister, how is it mounted in the engine bay? mine was just kind of laying in there when i bought the car. if i could mount it correctly, maybe i will keep it. any pics please? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

I can see NO earthly reason to lose the charcoal cannister. It's just there, and keeps at least some of the HCs from the air we breathe. Removing the EGR is another question, and you MAY be sorry you did it. VW and Porsche used it to control combustion chamber temps in the later D jet and L jet cars because they run so lean. If you think they run hot and drop valves with the EGR functioning, wait 'til you remove it. All the rebuilders I know require a functional EGR to validate the warranty for engines so equipped. They don't wanna eat engines with heat related problems, and you shouldn't either.
The air pump helps clean the exhaust, but it does rob some power and is probably a good thing to lose; or at least not a bad thing. The Cap'n

i don't mind keeping the charcoal canister. i just don't know where it mounts correctly.
i can't find any pictures. can't find it in my hayes manual. if theres anyone still using their canister, could you please show me where it's mounted? or maybe i'll just run the hose into the cabin so i can get high while i drive... hey, thanks for the pic! mine's a '75, and the canister is flopping around in the engine compartment. i guess the older ones are a little different.

We tried this on our track car only to find that the expansion tank is there to catch overflow from the tank when going around corners. We would slosh gas out onto the ground bad enough for corner workers to notice.

We replaced the expansion tank and gas will only travel that far. You can hear the gas in the expansion tank as the vapors expand, and you can see the tank suck the gas back inside when the vapors cool.

I would get rid of the charcoal filter and keep the expansion tank as a gas tank vent.

Just my opinion...

JOHNMAN, where would you run the vapor line going to the canister? in the plastic drain tube?
