Its not worth a damn!
The carb sucks, the runners are too long and it will make crappy power. In the winter the carb will turn into a huge chunk of ice! The only way to fly is dual carbs... Last time I worked on one of these was in 1995. Now I throw the damn things away! |

QUOTE(Jake Raby @ Nov 13 2004, 12:26 PM) Its not worth a damn! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) if it was heavier, you could use it as a boat-anchor ... get a keg of beer, make a bonfire, invite some friends over and have a contest and see who can throw it the furthest. If you really want a 914 with no power, off idle hole, poor cold startup then go for it.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) My '72 came with a single carb and never really ran great
QUOTE hmmm... i changed to duals, so i have a single progressive for sale... seems kind of futile at this point... Well the carb is a POS but the manifold center section and runners may be useful. I used them for the CIS installation on my '74. The VW/Audi CIS two stage throttle body fits the manifold nicely and the runners were easy to adapt for injector ports. crappy early digicam pics Attached thumbnail(s) |

Yep, they suck big time.
I won't sell them, install them or even look at them. I don't have a long enough pole to touch one. |

Ok, I know this will start a flame war, but, I don't care. FI is the best thing going for a stock motor. However, for someone who can't afford to retrofit to FI, or, can't afford to spring for a new set of 40 IDF's, and their car already has a 2BBL progressive weber, they can be tuned to be funcitional and economical. Even though they are not the optimal fuel delivery system, they work and are generally trouble free.
Btw, FI rocks!!!!! |

I'm in the same boat with Chris, I have a 1.7L w/progressive carb and the cold operation is nasty, especially here in PA. Also bad off of idle. Would dual carbs work for the 1.7L? Where can I get FI for this engine?

QUOTE(Spoke @ Nov 13 2004, 09:21 PM) Where can I get FI for this engine? everywhere! they all had it, none of the US cars came with carb(s) ... find a donor FI and slapp it on. ask in the classifieds. call the usual parts outlets, HPH, EASY, PartsHeaven etc etc etc. they (the FIs) are plentyfull ... Yeah, lots of spare 1.7 FI around. The only hard to find part is a good MPS. Now there are a lot of options on aftermarket FI, so there is no excuse to use carbs.
It may polute the water, but throw the carb into the Rideau. |

My 1986 Subaru GL has a progressive carb, and it runs like a champ. Its a flat 4 engine. Go figure. Never driven a 914 with carbs, so I cant comment, but I would take everyone's advise and junk it...
