hey everyone
just saw a 14 for sale on ebay and it came with some luggage. turns out it is the wrong one and mis represented-along with most of the car- but it got me thinking about the history of my (our) car/s and i am interested in buying a couple of books that i can reference all the details that i will run across. this luggage issue being a perfect example: what did it look like in which models, years was it offered, etc. does anyone have any suggestions on what to buy. i will probably get a few, so any and all suggestions are welcomed from a picture history coffee table to the more technical manuals. ps just did a search on google for 914 luggage not luggage rack, not one image, but lots of images of some of the members cars on this site. The 2 books in the pix below by Long & Johnson (noted above) are good authenticity resources - but both have errors & need to take stuff with a grain of salt.
. ... and in addition to downloading the free parts manual from the Porsche website's "Classics"/"Documents" section & the Haynes 914 Repair Manual & a CD or hard copy of the factory repair manual - add this collection of period articles & road tests of the 914... . Also the Originality & History forum on here & 914club, as well as Jeff Bowlsby's site above & p914.com are good resources for that. Jeff has a page with a bunch of the period 914 & accessories brochures too, which show what was available back-in-the-day! There's a definitive history in the 914 chapter of Porsche, Excellence was Expected. It's the first chapter in the second book.
I think this is a link to the edition I have. http://www.bentleypublishers.com/porsche/h...s-expected.html Earlier editions were two volumes. There is a newer version out so if you can, you should get the latest one if you're interested in the most recent stuff too. Of course you'll have to put up with the pesky history of the other Porsche cars as well. Frankly, for restoration purposes you can get more detail (via close-up pix) out of a combination of all the resources above. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

Holy **** -- it's made out of stainless STEE? I thought they quit making anything from stainless stee in 1918, after the Armistice. Hell, everyone knows that most of the regular stee is locked up at Area 51. Stainless stee? Forgetaboutit. |
