as for solid mounts - i think when using them - it is important to remove engine and trans evenly - cause if you start to lower engine or trans, first, you run the risk of twisting the opposite mount bracket or worse - i'd think.

were as rubber would give some and provide some play.

ps - that is one kick ass bell crank on zonker !!!

Any idea where this would mount

I've seen pictures but it's been a while. I thought they were still doing this on (at least some of) the newer cars.

Mark,

In the For What It's Worth dept. I've been running the 993 engine in the Rocket now for 4 years, and about 4000 miles. It's sitting on the stock 914/6 frame mount, rubber mount, and -6 engine mount.
The driving experience is pure torque and adrenaline. I love thrashing it.

I've noticed no issues so far.

The trans is using a Guard LSD, and the transmission mounts I got are the Wevo Blue urethane units.
I don't know if these help keep things in check, but nothings broke so far.

my 84 carerra uses a hydraulic damper in the rear and from what I read its required after the 3.2 for vibration more than torque..

The motors hit a harmonic balance that can make things shake to much...

For the front mount on a 2.4 motor....go for it.
I will buy one if you figure it out.

Ron. That's a big no-no in racer circles to mount a fuel gauge on the motor. A fire waiting to happen. I've seen a 911 light up at the track from exactly that mistake.

Is your '84 a cab? Mine is, and I've only seen the shock on cab cross-members, not on coupes or targa's. There wasn't one on my 993 cross-member when I got that engine either. Can't speak to the 964's... Don't run across them very often.

I'm pretty sure this is beaten to death at this point. But I checked out the Porsche online parts catalogs, and found the Carrera GT PET. Center engine mount and no additional support braces. I'm done looking. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

That might have been it. My memory is a bit foggy.

So the dampener on the cabriolets is for engine vibration, not torque?

Yes, from what I read, and it's really not that much.
Just told that I must have it....lots of opinions why, and I am all set, I have it.

Car really does not have that much torque, so even when going from zero to 100 it does not twist...

If your curious, go search the bird board.....loads of opinions

Took me awhile to find this little sucker. Mostly because I was looking for something substantial. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) It's so cute... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Yepp, that's the one. I always thought that was for dampening the engine twist under load, but i guess that is not the case ...

Honestly don't recall, but I recall lots of discussion about vibration...
Mine does not vibrate....wonder what it would do it I removed that...

Just went and looked again and it seems the two differences are this damper, and a rubber mount in the middle of the engine support bar, both are only on the cabriolet.

Still no real definitive answer if its for vibration or to keep the chassis from twisting...

Seems more like vibration, and some very good point were made regarding the transfer of twisting stress from a race car chassis to the engine castings and how porsche made every effort to avoid that transfer of twisting stress.

So oddly, at least how I am reading this, it may be to protect the engine castings from the chassis versus protecting the chassis from the engine twisting...

Sounds more viable that they wanted to isolate the engine castings from the more twisty cabriolet rear clip...which might move around more than a coupe..and could damage the engine...

Well, stock setup and I can lift a front wheel at an autox on street tires....so it's not that weak.

Also makes me think that when (not if) I put a big six in my 914, I will rethink the solid mounts that everyone seems to lean towards and isolate the motor a bit more...
Car vibrate plenty on its own.

Prototype mounts have been laser cut. Next week they get welded together. I had a jig from a previous project for locating the stock six mount bolt. But a real six mount came up for sale last week and I snagged it. I got it today and checked against my jig. They lined up, and now I know for sure.

Pics soon... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
