The 914 owners manual reccos a thinner oil in our hot weather - 5-30 IIRC - look for Montoya's post of an owners manual on here if you don't have a manual.

Also, synthetic will lack the old school oil additives, so you may want to look at something formulated for 1950's-70's classic/vintage cars.

thanks for the immediate feedback! There are some thread that says original manual oil recommendation is no longer applicable with the kind of oil being sold out there.
What do you recommend and what oil do you use?

thanks again and God Bless!

I'd only recommend hot rod oil formulated for flat tappet motors. Edelbrock, Lucas, Brad Penn, and Comp Cams make oil that meets those needs.

Joe Gibbs makes an oil specifically for flat tappet air cooled motors. You can order it from Jegs.

Your advice for the oil weight is ABSOLUTELY WRONG! VW and Porsche put 30 weight in at the factory, and that's what dealers used. Improvements to multi-grade oil products led to the use of 20w50. 5w30 will result in low oil pressure and probably overheating. Besides all that, why would you EVER use a thinner oil in hot weather, when the use of thicker oils is indicated.

I just changed my oil about 1000 miles ago with Castrol HD30. Would this oil be sufficient with a 74 1.8L motor?

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) too with the Cap'n. Why would you use a lighter weight oil when it's hotter out/summertime?
