Hey guys and gals I wanted to pass along info on a problem with a 50" Panasonic LCD TV I got a little over year ago. We absolutely love the TV, haven't had any problems until 2 days ago. I'm really glad we bought Sear's 3 year service plan. These TVs have a "lamp" that has a service life of about 10,000 hours which is a lot (atleast reasonable in my mind). The screen is supposed to give you a notice when the life is nearly up but we didn't get any warning..just zip and it was off. Had Sears send a repair man, he's ordering the lamp. Said the lamp cost $470 and the srv call cost $160 ...so $630 if I didn't have the service plan. Apparently the lamp is simple to replace too. Glad I don't have to pay...really consider those plans they push when making your next TV purchase.

Oh, I forgot to add that my lamp after 1 year has less than 4000 hrs on it, assuming 11 hrs a day.

Wow, cool that the bulb was covered under the plan, alot of times they don't cover "consumables" such as bulbs and battery packs.

But how much was the service plan?

Most often, those point-of-purchase service plans are not a good value.

It sounds like you got lucky (unlucky) and it was a good deal.

Doug,
How much was your LCD? My friend works in the flat panel industry and said LCDs last longer and operate cooler than Plasma. He said the prices should drop but he's been saying that for 2 years!
You know how much 914 you could have bought instead? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
