I need to modify 3 oil coolers for various projects, including mine. So I decided that since I'm doing all this other originality-inspired development, I might as well do something for the oil cooler. The original 914/6 coolers have a sweeping bend, not a hard 90 like most conversions use. I happened to have some 1" aluminum tube from a project 10 years ago, and I also had 1" mandrel for my pipe bender. So I gave it a shot. You'll notice the OE cooler has a much sharper bend (less sticking out the back). This is because the early coolers used 0.75" tube, which has a tighter minimum bend radius. I could make an OE version, but since the coolers I'm using have the 1" pipe, I made it to match. I also welded a AN-16 fitting on the end.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/chowtime.gif)

Yeah, that's the plan. But I have to nail down the process first. I may also just sell the bent pipe with or without fitting.

Coil on plug, cool stuff, are you using carbs or EFI?
I was wondering if there was a better ignition to use from my stock CIS distributor when switching to carbs.

BTW I like the smooth run of that cooler line, I was lucky to find a real /6 cooler.

Have Rick Olah post an image of the modified cooler he got from me. It is my belief that the fitting needs to be moved back a bit so the valve cover can be removed.

I was planning on machining a mount for the AN fitting at the cooler base and run braided from there. I am starting from a '72 4, so I have no originality to start with. Can you comment on the relative merits of the two approaches? Is there concern about the hose kinking? I was planning on AN 16. Clearly the 1 in aluminum tubing would allow for some cooling. Thanks for doing this stuff and showing it!

I was thinking the same thing so I went to look at my oil cooler/valve cover clearance. It looks like the fitting needs to be a set back closer to the oil cooler. I took some measurements on my 2.7 with a factory 6 oil cooler and Turbo valve covers. This is what I got. When the valve cover is on the distance from the cooler fitting is 45 mm . When I went to removed the valve cover I had a clearance of 10 mm between the two. If the cooler fitting was set forward about 10-13 mm more, I wouldn't be able to remove the cover as it would hit the cooling fins. I have not shaved the fins down yet to clear the inner mount. It may or may not clear once the fins are shaved on your motor but it looks like it may be tight. I haven't tried to put the oil line on but I plan on checking this later tonight to see if there's any other issues. I would say by looking at my set up and Mark's pics that the fitting needs to be set back and lowered a little. Here's some pics of what I have.
