Glad to see someone else giving the cookies some love. I had mine plastidipped to a twotone gold/silver combo but I might actually make it permanent with paint. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

They've grown on me. I wasn't a fan for a long time, but it seems something has changed my opinion in recent years.

There is a new inner long for the right and left being made in Germany that appears to have more of the factory details formed into it.
maybe even OG dies ? HESS , is a VW parts supplier

To answer Ricks question & for completeness Patrik Hess in Germany carries them. eBay is more expensive than his direct shop. I've just ordered a few bits from him so let's see what happens in the next few weeks

Ben's thread "Am I losing my mind" thread prompted me to bump his build thread. Anyone thinking about trying to talk him out of this car needs to know how special it is. Enjoy the read.

Time to bump this for Ben. His car is back for another little tweak. This time it is the rear trunk pan. I am just doing the minimum repair. The car is really nice. However there were a couple things I couldn't leave though. At some point there was some black petroleum based under coating sprayed over the factory rubber under coating. I am not sure any of you had to try to remove this stuff but it does not come off easy. I ended up using a spray can paint stripper, Heavy grease and oil cleaner, Brass brushes, plastic brushes. dish soap and a crap load of time.

More to come as I get closer to tig and spot weld the rear pan back in.

that looks great! my 75 had all kinds of gunk on the underside ofthe car too, mostly was a dealer applied Zebart crap all over that i had to clean out of the front trunk inside and outside and the engine compartment, and underside of the rear trunk. it took a lot of rags with brake cleaner which worked fairly well to disolve and remove before our repaint. it was all over up under the wheel wells also as you said a lot of time! i did mine so my body and paint guy didnt have to. Love that blue, how hard will it be to match due to the age of the original paint?

All the welding is finished. I used my Leno Spot Welder to face spot the floor flange tot he tail light panel. If there is any doubt the power this welder has you can see it smoked the paint on the outside of the panel. this is through the new flange and through the original flange I left in place.

On to prepping for paint. I need to crawl under the car and clean and prep the back of the welds. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) The car was repainted once and the exterior color is lighter and I think a nicer shade of blue. I believe when I did the repairs back 2014 I matched the exterior color because I needed to blend the right door jamb to the exterior QP. I doubt I have paint left from the last time..

With Spring time driving season hopefully right around the corner her in Minnesota it's time to dust off this thread, and the the car, so it's ready for some fun.

Attached Image

As noted in Rick's prior post, I dropped the car off with him January for a butt lift - well actually replacement of the rear tank pan. At one point I thought I had the skills and time to tackle it, but with an absence of time (and likely the skill as well), I phoned a friend. Naturally, as you'd expect, Rick did an amazing job repairing the car, doing it right, and making sure you might never know it was replaced. Big thanks to Rick as I know this took longer than he thought and kept him from the many projects of his own in the garage.

Attached Image

Next week, the car is back to get its engine and transmission put back in. Normally I'd tackle this, but I had the engine looked at by a local engine specialist this summer. I fully expected that it needed a rebuild, but he dissuaded me. That's a good quality in an engine builder I suppose given it saved me a lot of dough. He did, however, remove the chain housings and cam towers to address some oil leaks that I couldn't have otherwise fixed on my own.

Beyond the engine reseal and look over, the car is being treated to a rennshift shifter, new MSDS headers from Marty, a trick Achtungkraft exhaust, and some other little upgrades. I've declared the last two summers officially the summer of driving this 914-6, and this time around I think the car will really be in a good spot to log some miles.

Stay tuned for more updates

With the help of my daughter, I got the back end of the car reassembled after unloading it from its visit at Rick's for floor pan repair. She stuck around for longer than expected in the garage and without too much effort, we got the rear wiring harness back in place, trunk gaskets back in, taillights installed with new gaskets, 914-6 trunk badge in-place, blasted and refinished exhaust heat shield installed as well as some other odds and ends.

Attached Image

I then loaded the car back up in the trailer and dropped it off this morning to be reunited with its drivetrain. With a little luck it might be back on the road next week, but we will see.
