I have 2 LeMons race cars One is a 1974 BMW 2002 and the other is a 1973 914 2Ltr. Has anyone seen or heard of the BMW engine being installed into the 914? I see that Kennedy has an adapter plate. The reason I'm contemplating this swap is it would be nice to have the same power plant on both cars.

Does it turn the right way? Does it fit in the engine bay?

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Yes and Yes Your mount might be a bit interesting, as the M10 is a front sump design and you won't be able to use a simple crossbar to support the mounts. Apart from that, do it and show us the pictures... |

I have owned many BMW 2002s and they are great cars.
Did you know that a 2002 SEDAN with an iron block, 4 seats, rear side glass, an iron diff, etc, etc, weighs exactly the same as your 2 seat, aluminum or magnesium case engine and transaxled 914? 990 kgs. Pretty good engineering. |

Did you know that when they raced the BMW 2002s in Trans AM, SWB 911s (which don't handle nearly as well as 914s) blew their doors off? Betcha you didn't even know 911s were sedans, right? SCCA said so ....................

There was another 914 with a Rabbit engine. at LeMons? any more details? sorry to threadjack... why not go the other way? Mid Engine 2002??? The rabbit engine is used in off-road applications. I see more than a few at FAT Performance being prepared so there is a fair amount of modifications already available. I'm leaning towards the BMW engine because I have a ton of parts since we are already racing a 2002. |

Don't get me wrong, I love my 914s that's why I have two, a 2.2 six and a 2.0 four.
However, The owner's manual for my 914 says acceptable oil consumption for the air-cooled engine is one quart per 600 miles. The owner's manual for my 1970 2002 ti (factory eurospec 11 to 1 comp, dual side draft Solexes) said "Maximum engine speed is 6,500 RPM. DO NOT DRIVE AT A CONTINUOUS 6,500 RPM FOR MORE THAN 12 HOURS". For the Autobahn I guess. |
