OT - inner ear probelm, anyone have this problem before? Options

Sorry for the off topic question but I just spent the last 2 1/2 days in the hospital with a inner ear problem. Started Tuesday night with very bad dizzy spell then a lot of (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/barf.gif) followed by a nice ride to the hospital. A bunch of test and CAT scans later I was told everything is normal but I have some sort of inner ear problem.

I can finally sit in a chair with out feeling like I am going to fall, walking is fun, looks like I have had a few to many (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beer3.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/drunk.gif) So has anyone here ever have this happen. Its not fun (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif) and I hope it never happens again. Hopefully in a few more days I will feel normal again.

I have a similar problem. Not so much balance but ringing. It stems from the canal between the sinuses and the ear. I had head trama in a car accident and didn't feel the effects until 8 years later.

if you have a problem in the inner ear they should have done a MRI with and without contrast. the CAT scan will not show any soft tissue problems. are you having any hearing loss? does your ear feel "full" of fluid? did you see an Otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat) or even better a Neuro Otologist

I am NOT a doctor. I do have alot of experiece with having a ear problem that was difficult to diagnose and i spent months researching inner ear problems before finally getting the correct diagnosis and treatment.

I had problems with mine as residual effects of the flu. Bend over to put my shoes on and almost fall over. A round of Erythromycin took care of wobblies.

I can live with the ringing and I just ignore the voices.....

Long story short: Get to a specialist or specialists and get it taken care of.

This sounds like something my wife had, and she wound up losing her hearing completely. Started with a cold that turned into a sinus infection, that turned into no infection but she was left with ringing and noises (Tinnitus) and some hearing abnormalities (everything was too loud and she couldn't differentiate well between what was being said right in front of her from noises out on the street) . Eventually Menieres was was ruled out but they couldn't find anything else that was causing it, and she bought hearing aids to help. About 3 months after purchasing the hearing aids, one morning she woke up and couldn't hear anything at all, and hasn't been able to since. Leading up to the complete loss, she saw over 13 specialists over a period of 2 years, had test after test done as well of rounds of antibiotics, and nobody ever did figure out what was going on. That was last February. We just got a referral (finally) to see a doctor at UCLA about Cochlear Implants.

Get to a specialist.

Joe, thanks for the links. For the record, I already fell better than when I posted the first message. I just got some sinus pressure around the top of my nose and above my eyes. I am on some meds, which seems to be helping.

I wife called ENT doc and I seem him first thing Tuesday am. Doc told my wife if anything changes to page him and get to the ER. Overall I feel its nothing serious as I trust my GP doc, he was the one who found my tumor when others couldn't. and he always errors on the side of caution.

I knew a fellow with inner ear problems related to diet. In a strictly non-technical sense, here it is. Supposedly, what he ate (salt) affected the density of the solution in his inner ear, which would cause the nerves or whatever inside to become bouyant, which started signaling the brain that something was moving. Nausea would follow shortly. He did suffer hearing loss associated with this ailment.

Your symptoms almost sounded like a form of vertigo. My wife has a bout with this in the early spring when her sinus get screwed up. The doc put her on some antibiotics and it clears it up, the only problem is it makes her sleepy. Glad to hear that the meds are getting you back to normal.

I've had this trouble a couple of times and it's pretty unpleasant. I think it's called labyrinthitis.The balance organ in the inner ear becomes inflamed and that causes nausea. The first time it cleared up when I took some Dramamine (used for motion sickness). It didn't work the second time though.

Out of curiosity, did they check the B-12 levels in your blood? That is a deficiency that can easily go undetected and causes vertigo and shall we say "cambered" walking. (you know, tilting to one side)
Anyway, kinda sounds like it may have just been a bad infection that is starting to clear up.
Just thought I'd add in my 2 cents worth!

Interesting. I had similar issues a couple of years ago when I was taking a LOT of B complex for a few weeks. Doc said "nah, can't be that", but a couple of days after quitting the B, the symptoms went away and never came back.

look into trying some lipoflavanoids. (sp?) I work for an ENT, and he gives that stuff out and it helps some vertigo patients.

Same here, except I felt the effects a few days after. Vestibular concussion. Hyper sensitivety to noise, ringing and balance problems.
There is a test called an ECOG. You can have done to check the fluid levels in your inner ear. That can help an ENT determine if it's Menieres disease or not. Fifty percent is normal. Mine were around seventy five to eighty percent.
I had endolymphatic surgery on my left ear, about a year ago. Nothing I would reccomend. Made the ringing and balance issue worse. Hope your problem subsides soon. See a specialist or two or three. Avoid caffine, salt and alcohol. Diet can play an important role.

Sorry to hear you are having problems.
I have had hearing loss for 60 years but what you described initially sounds like more recent experiences I have.
Blockage.
When you are sitting, laying down and stand up suddenly, the blood is rushing into the area where it had been partially blocked from because of blockage. The results will be nausea, dizziness and just plain old wobble legged reactions.

Even if you are VERY active, blockage of the blood vessels can happen and do. I was hyper all my life and still tend to be. Hyperglycemia may be the problem. That is defined as too much sugar in the blood. Normally the doctor would do a blood-sugar check up for diabetes.By all means get a different opinion since doctors sometimes miss the mark as they try to see 200 patients their staff has scheduled for them to see.

What I do about mine is slow down on fatty intake but other than that, I roll with the flow.
Again. See a different doctor for a 2nd opinion. My situation is my own and others will be different.
