I decided to pop open the case on my 2.0 /4 to replace the cam with a more aggressive one and also to open up some of the passanges for the HD oil pump.
I found the cam bearings to be not in the best shape. Supposedly the motor only had 10k miles on it before I took possesion of it. I do know the motor sat for at least a year before I got it. Attached image(s) |

The odd shape of those pits suggests electrolysis.
Iron/water/non-ferros metals.....munchies. Could use a bit more light on the subject, tho. |

When he first said something the other night.. I wondered if water had sat in the bottom of the engine.

The crank bearings look decent, I can tell a few bits of the babbit or bearing media found it's way into the crank bearings.
The cam looks perfect, no signs of wear or discoloration. Dissimilar metals might have done it as JP mentioned. |
