Saw these on Ebay:Billet intermediate plate

Would this improve the 901's ability to handle horsepower? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif)

IMO, no it wouldn't make much difference.

The 901 has a few weaknesses, the biggest is the 1st and reverse gear hung over the back end unsupported, not much you can do about that.
the second is the case has a tendency to warp under high torque loads, the intermediate place may help a little with that. The third weakness is that the pinion gear is a bit skinny and under high torque it can deflect and climb the ring gear, ruining the proper gear mesh and breaking things.
If you have a bunch of money you need to get rid of, buy that plate. just don't expect it to solve all the limitations of the 901.

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/agree.gif) This is the biggest one, IMO.

I don't know if the billet intermediate plate is worth it or not. I installed one in a 901 and never have tried it (we converted to 915).

I agree that the first/reverse hung out behind the intermediate plate is a big weakness, but in my opinion, when HP and torque are bumped up, the next weak spot seems to be that the mainshaft and pinion shaft warp/bend/deflect and let the gearstacks climb each other (which in my experience generally eats 4th gear).

Perhaps this is a result of the pinion gear climbing the ring gear, but I don't know for sure.

Definitely no pile of money I'm looking to light on fire around here. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)

I figured that if the solution to the HP handling problem was as simple as a billet plate, that would be the talk. But, since I don't know squat about the details of the issue, I knew I could ask here and get the real dope. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/pray.gif)

Rich at HPH strongly recommended the Billet plate in my rebuild currently underway. Perhaps he would care to comment.

A 904 mainshaft in conjunction with the billet intermediate plate and a few other mods that I cant think of at the moment would be about as far as you could go on the 901. This would safely handle about 200-240hp.
