Pics of color matched bumpers...stock style, need ideas for my new 'glass bumpers Options

Decided to go with 'glass bumpers (90% sure I'll get them from Rennspeed)

Now to decide on coloring scheme

All black??

black top with silver bottom??
possible if I find a nice shiney silver.....

When I go to FG bumpers, I had the idea to use the chrome adhesive foil they use for signage to mimic the chrome. I have seen the stuff and it looks pretty good.

I like the bright bits on our cars. The monochrome look is too common nowadays.

My 914 has glass bumpers from rennspeed. Decent fit, I just rattle canned them flat black last year (in a rush to finish). They actually look great I think. But I have been thinking about going back to steal painted bumpers. I have a front one, but would need a rear with or without top in just about any condition. So I might be selling these? that Chrome vinyl has a very short lifespan.
I've been looking into the metallic vinyls and most of them are rated at 1 year vs 6 or 8 for the standard colored vinyls.
SKline's friend who sells vinyl cutters and such also warned me to stay away from them because they don't adhere as
well as the standard vinyls.

I have used "chrome" rattle can paint on fog light grills in combo. with chrome bumpers. Looks pretty good. Not sure how it would be on a complete bumper but might be worth a try.

the car only sees the daylight about 20 days per year, so not worried about the material over time.

The chrome spraypaint is pretty good. Maybe I'll try that first.

Well, I had about 5PM's after posting that one. Looks like Craig has dibs on them if he wants them. If he backs out (1st one to send something) then you were second. I like them, the only reason I would be removing them is to add a little more protection to the car.

with the steel early bumpers you have no "crush" zones....a small impact can cause damage to the body of the vehicle

with the stock steel bumper, with a small impact (stop-n-go traffic) , the rubber top can actually do more damage than good since it will make contact with the hood causing it to bow/bend...

for my 'glass bumpers, I'll be making a lightweight tubular steel frame that'll go in between the bumper and the car, next, I will be adding an expanable foam on the backside of the bumper.

depending on the impact, the 'glass bumper will give absorbing some of the energy, then the tubular steel frame adds more protection....obviously at a certain speed or impact, nothing will protect you, something going to get bent (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

I think the "hybrid" bumper is a good comprimise, or at least for me it is...I need new bumpers for my green car....the rear bumper is/was chromed that was sanded at one time and has now started to rust,the top pad is the ugliest one I've ever seen....a new pad is over $200 and it'll cost me at least $50 to get the chrome stripped...so a 'glass bumper is more cost effective

for the front, the stock bumper is missing the pad and the bumper is bent due to an impact (which when it did have a bumper pad, the bumper pad tweaked the hood)
so a 'glass bumper is once again more cost effective and lighter to boot and easier to repair replace in case of a small mishap (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

I thought, correct me if I am wrong (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/slap.gif) That the little steel spacers fit inside the mounting holes on the body? Hence giving a little bit of "give" before the bumper steel would touch the body steel?

I can say that I hit a deer once in a 914. Put a dent in the bumper, bent the headlight back, broke the turnsignal lense. I popped off the bumper, re-adjusted the headlight, popped the dent in the bumper out, got a new lense, couldn't even tell anything happened. That same situation now would see me pulling body steel back out, I know it would.

This all came about Sunday. My wife and I were driving the 914 around and I had to avoid being bumped twice. A gentle reminder to also fix my horn! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif) Both would have been small taps, but would have involved repainting parts of the car. I but knowing what I have been through before, I think the stock bumpers offer a little more projection to the car for low speed, low impact stuff.

Mueller, I took off the heavy late bumpers and installed the liteweight FG ones I got from Brad. Damn, everytime I parked somewhere (usually the far corner of the lot) someone had to park by "feel" and pushed the FG bumper up onto the front hood. Thats why I sourced some Chrome early ones so there is some basic protection on the car.

Fantastic thread... I painted mine flat black, with "bumper" the same color as the car and the lower valance flat black, However i think i like the look of the "bumper" painted silver the best out of all.... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif)
