I need to put a couple of syncro rings in my tranny. (1st and 2nd) They look pretty simple but whats the scoop on them? Why would a brass ring with a notch cost so much to make?
I am a machinist and can make my own pretty easily if I had the specs on new ones, but is it the material that they are made of that makes them so expensive? Are they bronze or brass or what?

Not sure of the material, but the Haynes indicates that they're Molybdenum coated. New O.D. is shown as 76.12 mm to 76.48 mm.

If this doesn't help, at least you're bumped up so a real P-car mechanic can hook you up with more detailed info. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

High precision? 60 bucks doesnt seem too bad for a high precision brass/bronze short run piece. Its not like 300 bucks for a set of main bearings for a 912...

The syncro rings are steel with the afore mentioned molybdenum coating on the outer surface.

Are they all this composition? I have seen a variation in the price from $50 from "blondde" formerly "partwerks" on ebay to $80 in all the online P catalogues.

Not too long ago they were $20-25 a piece. It is all about market demand/supply. The exterior coating must be rough as well.

Hey Mike, what's the best way to tell good used syncros from bad ones? I have some that are obviously good, and others that are obviosuly bad.. then I have some with a slight groove on one side, and some with no groove but some random pitting.

I would have to see them. As long as one side is rough it should be useable. The #1 way to tell that they are spent is that they are smooth. They can't entice the slider to spin up if they are not rough.

I'm wondering if the "source" of the previous cheap synch bands was mexico. The price increase occured about the time they stopped producing Beetles.

So what is your take on these, Syncro rings are they worth the $50 or should I buy the ones from PP or Tweeks (Mid America Motorworks) for $80?

that is not a syncro that fits a 901 tranny, it looks more like a piston ring

From my understanding, they are coming from Germany now, and are probably NOS.

I heard (don't remember where from, sorry!) that Porsche came down on an aftermarket manufacturer of the synchro rings a couple of years ago, and got them to stop producing 901-type synchro rings. (Possibly other stuff as well.) Supply & demand took over, and the prices quickly doubled to about $50 each. (They've since climbed even more, obviously...)

No idea if the story is true or not.
