I have gone through two carpet sets through members here. In both cases the carpet is thin and slightly undersized.

I don;t want perlon or some cheap loop carpet; pile seems to give off fuzz.

I want to get some carpet by the yard and do the car myself. I don;t have a heater lever or center console so I want to make a clean center area; all the kits have the heater cutout.

Does anyone have an carpet experience or has anyone done anything custom?

I see squareweave, german pile, domestic loop.

Any good, reasonable, sources out there? World Uph is too pricey.

Pictures of installs would be greatly appreciated. thx

Look for a local automotive upholstery supply. They will have exactly what you need

I got this carpet at Home Depot. I cut the new carpet from the old set and then sewed a edge around the carpet and added the footpanel to the drivers side.
When I picked up the drivers panel I also got some 1/2 inch backing and sewed this to underside of the driver and pass floor carpet. Got about $20 invested into it.
I do have a industrial walking foot sewing machine.
The carpet has held up great, been in the car for 6yrs now.
Guess I should have cleaned it before taking the pictures.

I ordered a TON of samples from different places. I have about 15-20 different 3" square pieces. Home Depot carpet is NOT Automotive carpet.

I ended up getting 2.5 yards of this from http://www.miamicorp.com

http://www.miamicorp.com/default.aspx?page...p;catlist=29787

It's as nice and plush as the carpet in my 2012 BMW. The color is perfect for what I need, and they shipped it immediately for me.

I just ended up tracing an old set of patterns I forgot I had in the basement from 10y ago. I'm having the guy that did my interior put the binder around the outside for me.

I'm about to redo my dash front and just ordered a load of basket weave samples off jbugs.com. No idea of the quality, but they have a selection of carpet and you can request free samples through their website.

Home Depot has a short loop indoor/outdoor carpet in charcoal gray that you might look at. I haven't used it in a 914 but for the bunk boards on my jet ski trailer. It has been holding up great, considering the harsh environment of salt water and sunlight it's exposed to as well as the weight of the skis. I like the looks of it better then the crappy black perlon I have in my car now.

Thats what I used above. It was avalible in black at the time. I've used the gray for another set since then.

Well,
I do sell the grommets if you guys need them for your projects. So regardless of if you buy from me or not I can make your carpets stay.

Honestly,
I've looked at the Home Depot stuff, it's loop spacing is not tight. Yes you can put it in, but it is a light duty material.

I've seen some 914s done in the same style German box weave carpet that the 356 guys use and I think it looks the most vintage. I know it is not correct, but it looks killer IMHO.

I am using the RS Perlon felt like the factory 914-GTs used. I bought it in bulk from Apbiz. I am almost done installing. Just have to do the center console. The stuff is very light, but probably not the most durable.

I am using the cheap home depot stuff in the trunks...actually universal carpet from Pep Boys.

The carpet kits don't seem much better. My plan is to get some material for the longs, center, and front bulkhead, and order Lloyds mats for the floors.

I think the Lloyds mats are pile? i don;t really like pile cause it gives off fuzz.

Are the Lloyds mats good quality and worth the price? Maybe I'll make my own mats too.

I am leaning towards a squareweave or tight loop; seems to look the best.

I've got cut pile from the local auto upholstery store. There were 2 grades, I went with the thicker @ $30/yd. I also went 1 piece like modern cars. Carpet comes 54" wide and the 914 is 52" or so door to door following the contours. Then I put floor mats in.
