I'm on 91 East back from Santa Ana to pick up parts around noon. I see a 911S (996) in the fast lane buzz past me. I look around for clear traffic. I punch it to catch up to the guy who's chatting away on his cell phone, steering with one hand. I pull up next to him and wave and he kinda ignores me. Oh well, I'll just continue on my way. I'm in the fast lane, about 10 cars up from the guy, and i hear someone honk their horn to my right. Oh hey, look! it's the 996 owner, and is he waving? Oh, no, he's giving me the finger with an angry look on his face. What an asshole. That must have been pretty tough seeing he had one hand on his cell phone and the other in my direction.
What a dick. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/chair.gif) |

Dont wave to 996 drivers... they are the enemy.
Seriously, since when is a 996 a porsche? Is it air cooled? Is it light? Is it sparse? Its a lexus in disguise. |

Hey, at least he recognized you... that's like major progress. Up here you'd pretty much have to nail him to get the chin to lower.....

Aw lay off the jackass in the 996. It was probably a Tip, which really IS the enemy.
Otherwise, this crap about the 996 as NARP is as ridiculous (maybe more so) than the 914 being NARP. The 996 C2 was lighter than a 993 C2 and is better to DRIVE in every way than the 993 -- unless you really like the "raw" experience (read: nostalgia). But if THAT's the ultimate goal, one has to ask if we should all go back to Gmund coupes...which are horrors on the road! Personally, I love the 1970s mix of raw vs. refinement, but I love the new cars too -- and I defy anyone on this board to take any Lexus down a backroad and then any 996 six-speed down the same section and call the latter a Toyota product. Even tho' the doors on a plain 996 *do* close shut like a Japanese cars... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/barf.gif) A factory tour guide once walked up to a 996 on the assembly line and slammed the door, saying "nothing sounds like a 911's door when it closes." Someone forgot to tell him to kill that line after Porsche stopped building 993s... |

Funny, I would drive any 914, any 944, 928, 924, 356 etc. But wouldn't want to drive around a 996, 968.
986, yep, 951, yep, 993, 964 yep, yep. Just don't like the 996's for some reason? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif) |

I totally respect your position Dan.
I guess it all comes down to what people like -- and a lot of people don't like the "bland" styling of the narrow 996s. Oddly, while everyone seems to love the new 997, I am not so sure yet... To me, the 996 is a great return to the 901 of 1963/4, retro done the right way. The 997's got a lot of busy shutlines and seems a bit forced. 924s? Love 'em -- the GT/GTS ranks as an all-time favorite! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wub.gif) pete |

I dunno what others feel, but I'm a big fan of the originals (I love my dad's '71 E Targa), and I love all other old air cooled porsches.
With my reasoning, if I'm gonna drive a water-cooled car it might as well be a piece of classic american iron (lately I've had my eye on this '49 oldsmobile 76 that for sale). Water colled porsches don't do anything for me. Oh, by the way around here I've never been flipped off by a guy in a 996, even when driving a truck (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) Must depend on where you live (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) . |

A 996 uses a liquid that passes through a heat exchanger that is cooled by air to control the engine temperatures.
I guess "real" porsches don't have oil coolers. A 996 will run circles around a 993, they are fast and handle very well. The styling is dummied down a bit too much for my taste but they are true performance sports cars. I've driven one so I have some experience to base that statement on, maybe that should be a requirement. |

I guess the 996 is just an evolution of the olders P-cars but their drivers are not an evolution of the others P-cars drivers; They were probably considering buying a Lexus
