Removing Rear Glass, Which way does it come out? Options

Does the rear glass come out from inside or outside the car? No i don't want to break it (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

I'm assuming its a simple job or remove some trim & sealer, any tips?

I have removed the rear glass in this manner. Remove the seats and the backpad, then the seatbelts that are bolted into the Targa bar, then the bolsters that secure to the targa bar. Then you are ready to remove the glass. It comes out into the inside of the car.Good luck.

It comes out from the inside. I believe you have to remove the backpad and all of the trim surrounding it.

I have to do this faily soon myself....the car I just got has tinted windows and the rear glass is too dark for me.....the side windows are tinted as well, but so far I've only driven the car with the windows down and top off (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

The glass comes out from inside the car. Mine was (barely) held in with some old adhesive and silicone remnants (!). (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/unsure.gif)

Just did this...to put new vinyl on the roll bar. It's a relatively easy job (took me two or three lunch breaks working slowly and with patience). But that included all the exterior roll bar trim, too.

You'll need to remove:

-The backpad from behind the seats
-The top anchoring points for the seatbelts
-The coathooks (push UP on the black plastic covers)
-The side roll bar interior trim (after the coathooks, just one screw per side, hiding under little round black covers)
-The black vinyl trim piece that goes across the top front (interior side) of the roll bar.

The last step is the hardest part, as there are a LOT of tiny screws that are hard to locate with a screwdriver and the trick (thanks Brad!) is to unscrew them until you hear them "click" because they're turning without engaging in the holes anymore. With all the screws out and the piece loose, you CAN get it off the car while the rear top latches are still in place, but it requires careful manuevering and working the top latches into different positions as you go. A second person would be very helpful for this step. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/grouphug.gif)

Also, you may have a tough time removing the interior sie trims if the side window rear rubber and aluminum locator track thingies are pinching them. If so, push the rubber up and out (take your time!) and then remove four tiny screws per side.

I hope I didn't forget anything and forgive me if this isn't the definitive guide on the job -- maybe some others have better advice, but this strategy worked for me.

P.S. I decided to spend the dough to have a professional window installer paint on an epoxy base onto the body and then REALLY glue the thing into my car, if only because I wanted to be SURE it would never leak or rattle again. When I got the car back so I could reinstall everything, the window felt like you could lift the car with it... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beerchug.gif)

Yes, EVERYTHING really has to come out, including all of the padding on the inside of the targa bar. The glass is supposed to be glued into place, but chances are the only thing still holding it there now is the pressure from the padding and some old tape. If it's still being held in, and was as originally installed, there should be butyl tape holding it in, which usually has a wire embedded in it. Dig out a bit of that wire, pull, and the whole thing should come out.

Reinstall with more butyl tape.

Hey Mike!

You might be able to just pull the tint off the glass without removing the windows. I've done it to three cars so far (some clown tinted just the side windows on our Boxster).

It's just a nasty job with citrus degreaser after you peel away all of the tint. Probably not the "right" (read: professional, paid) way, but it worked for me...

best way to remove window tint

peel it off, mix up some soapy water. squirt thw window down, then take a razor blade and scrap it off. you should be able to do the window in 5 mins or less. the tint goes on with soapy water best to take it off with it

You do not have to remove the targa bar pad to remove the rear window or to reinstall it. I have done 12 of them and only did that to the first one, I found out, hey that wasn't nessacary, don't do that again.
