So I have a side view mirror question. I bought a junk yard jewel from a guy in Alabama. With the car I received 1 chrome mirror and 2 black plastic mirrors. The holes in the base of the chrome mirror are two narrow for the holes in the car. The black plastic mirrors seem to have a bottom part that bolts to the door, and they slip over that. Conceivably, the holes could fit those mirrors.

So my question is did the 75 or newer cars come with the black plastic mirrors, and could my doors be from a 75 or newer?

I've never seen anything but chrome mirrors standard on a 914. Maybe the chrome mirror you received is not a 914 mirror? Or maybe the original holes in the doors were welded over and new holes drilled?

The mirrors are stainless and the left and the right are interchangeable. Unless you really want a custom look I think it is worth tracking down the originals. The passenger side has the nuts on the inside of the door skin and if the car did not come with that mirror the holes have not been drilled.

No - they did not ship with plastic mirrors even in 76.

Yes, my bad, stainless mirrors. However, although you can turn a driver's side mirror about its base to fit the passenger side, there is a mirror with convex glass dedicated to the passenger side.

You can read more about exterior mirrors for the 914 here:

Thanks! I will check to see if there are nuts welded inside. And get a measurement and pics of the stainless mirror I do have.

You'd know if they are 75-76 doors. They are quite a bit heavier.

I saw something on another site, where someone suggested that there were different mirrors for the overseas offerings.....

So it looks like I have one nice stainless, and 2 black plastic mirrors....

Good point. I wonder how hard those convex mirrors are to find.

I have a convertible that has the option of passenger side mirrors, but you cannot see them from the drivers seat if they are placed where they look OK. The convex might be a nice touch. I am thinking the trailer towing mirrors would look a bit overdone.

"Different" does not mean "plastic". The plastic ones were popular aftermarket modifications. Fairly decent odds of them being Vitaloni "Baby Tornado" mirrors, as those were immensely popular up through the 90s.

How about a pic of what you have?

Vitaloni "Baby Tornado" mirrors, all right. Down to the blue tint in the glass, which is supposed to cut down on glare.

Very definitely aftermarket. I think I bought mine from Automotion back when they were in Santa Clara.
