We'll after over two years of these sitting in the garage (along with a myriad of other crap) I finally had accumulated what I needed to backdate. I bought these at Hershey in 2012, they were in very good shape and the tops were perfect. So l started the week before last and just dug in. I used some of Ken Steele's tutorial which worked out ok, but I found a couple other tricks that made the job go smoother.

For the front, which I did first, I found it best to leave on the valance, as it not only supports the bumper but dictates it's location. However, that thin BUB support rail has to go first; I used a dremel with a thin cutoff disc. I went through 5 or 6 but BFD (as long as we're using acronyms here). It allowed for a very smooth, fine cut. I also removed whatever flanges necessary by starting a shallow pilot hole, and then reaming the sucker out with a 1/2" bit. Worked fine.

Ok, back. Heres the tab removed..(IMG:style_emoticons/default/sawzall-smiley.gif)

Then I hit it with some krylon paint/ primer to cover bare metal. The rest was straight forward, and worked out well.

To be continued...

Once the bumper was removed ,I installed the factory valance, and placed Mark's LE replica spoiler into position, scribed the mounting holes from the back, and drilled it out. Very nice product, fit perfectly and looks darn good if'n you ask me.

Ok, I had already installed the horns and fogs... Used Rivnuts to do so. They are easy to install and worked great, I just centered the hole on the little flat and drilled away..,

Next was the back. Here is where I deviated from Ken's thread. He had removed the valance, but again, I used it to my advantage. Once placed, it dictated the bumper location. But I had a hard time accepting measurements for hole locations. So after consuming a little head scratching elixir, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer3.gif) I decided to let the bumper tell me where to drill. I glued the dog bones into their true position, then, using the sleeve insert as a guide, pulled them out just enough, say 1/4", to smear a little grease as a marker to pinpoint (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) the hole location...it worked so well I was able to use the bolts as fasteners instead of a stud...

I'm glad I did as the measurements suggested would not have worked out.

I thought about black, but I needed some paint for the back panel, so went with body color bumpers..

I ain't no ScottyB ...but it's good enough for my lofty standards.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif)

I think body color bumpers are very cool and enhance the lines of a 914. Nicely done.

Thanks Marc. Forgot to add, the titties came off the BUBs. This was a California car, I think Delaware had them also, kept me from having to weld and grind the existing holes. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welder.gif)

Very nice work. I like the small BUB tits you added to the early bumpers. Provides a bit of protection (hopefully) from fools who do not know how to park and seem to think bumpers are for bumping. Your car looks nice.

Looks great Joe! Yeah the car loses weight at the ends, so it's a huge difference.

I have become a fan of keeping these cars original, but that sure does look nice.
Yep, removing weight from the ends of the car helps handling and feel of the car very much. In this case it is a win win. Looks much better and handles/feels better also.
Well done!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif)

Like the blacked-out Fuchs. What center caps are those? 205 tires?

Gentlemen, thanks for the compliments. I really did come close to bagging the conversion for the sake of originality, but losing the weight is a good thing.

The center caps I picked up off eBay. I had to turn them down a bit on the lathe and then open the Fuchs (!) a little on the router table but they're nice, solid aluminum. Tires are 205/65s

Did you remove the studs from the bumper pads ? I want to do the same since I have those holes.
