Deputy, you're way overthinking this.

Find a good 914, not the "best one out there". Drive it, fiddle with it, learn to live with it.

Sell it later, or not, if you like. If you don't trash it, it will likely be worth at least what you paid for it. And in the meantime, you've gotten to drive a fun little two-seater go-kart on the street.

I may put a deposit on this one if it checks out.

Unfortunately I can't find a middle ground on these cars...

I know I want a 73-74, 2 liter. For both performance and resale. And from what I've seen so far, they're either total POS rusty project cars, or if they're even remotely decent the sellers want inflated prices.

If I could find a "decent", "good enough" one with a clear title that is mechanically sound... I'd buy it tomorrow. However, I'm seeing cars that are no where near original, with issues, for $18k and up.

I do appreciate all the advice and tips from everyone on here. This is a great community!

IMHO mid 20's for a restored & documented LE IS NOT an an inflated price. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/chowtime.gif)
but I may be biased. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Agreed. Hence the reason I'll probably buy it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

However, there are so many other ones out there with rust, carbs, and unmatching numbers that people are asking 18k and up.

If this car is correctly prepared, then the price is right and you should buy it. Keep it original. Don't screw it up with anything non stock and it will hold its value.

My LE is in great condition, save two small tears in the driver seat. I've spent a lot of time and money working out a lot of kinks. I just got it back from the shop yesterday - 10 months and $5,000 later...but worth it. I have it insured for $40K, just sayin'. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

I'm not carrying any insurance on mine (but one day I sure will).
It awaits full roto restoration hopefully to start this winter. I saved it just days before it was destined for the crusher.
Features it came with:
Air conditioning
Intermitent
Power antenae
Heated rear window

Funny how buyers always think prices are inflated.
Until it is their turn to sell!

I'm ready to buy. Seller is slow. We've emailed and spoken. Just waiting to solidify things.

You could insure it for $100k if you're willing to pay the premiums. Doesn't mean it would ever sell for that price. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Again, you can ask anything you want. But a car is only worth what a buyer is willing to pay. I've bought and sold a lot of cars. Price it reasonably and it will sell.
