It's been a while but Leeloo is getting closer to getting back on her feet. Basically what started as a tranny rebuild for a broken R&P is now getting closer to the end after getting in there to do a "few things". DWD set in and since I thought "while I was in there"....you get the idea... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

First off was getting the 901 fixed. After taking it apart it was found that the rear mainshaft bearing obliterated itself and ended up tilting the mainshaft under load. It proceeded to wipe out the R&P and 3 gears. Not a pretty sight. After a rebuild with 3 new gears, new synchros, seals and the installation of a Wavetrac TBD, she is ready rock! All buttoned up and under her own power now.

Next up I wanted to tie the suspension points together and have a safety cage that would be PCA/SCCA/NASA legal, so I took her to Tony at TC Design and had him install a very nice cage. The fab work came out great and I had him push the door bars out a tad a la a cup car. The cabin feels very roomie, bigger than my Spec Boxster. I am very pleased with the result.

Next up was some weight reduction. So I sold the metals hoods and stock top and went with Roger Sheridan products. Here are some shots of the mock ups after I cut down the raw f/g to start the fitment process. Roger's products fit great and are super lightweight.

And now for the meat and potatoes of the diet...I have started pulling everything out not needed for the track or an AX. I plan on having the car be a closed top car with a Lexan windshield for track use, so some compromises have been made on weight. First off is getting rid of the tar.... >:( I decided on using a heat gun and putty knife. It came out pretty quick.

I also have been cutting out panels, drilling out the spot welds on any unused fastener or tab and have been grinding on the car for days! The end is in sight, but it will be a few more weekends of work before she is ready for primer.

To help facilitate the seam sealer removal, I bought an air tool from Dent Fix that has "fingers" on it. Man, this thing just rips through the sealer and makes short, easy work of it. Here is a pic of the sealer on a door and another of what it looks like after about 5 minutes using this tool. And it's fun! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dance.gif)

I've started playing with how the interior will come out. I'll probably make my own dash and go back in eventually with a digital dash and other data ack goodies. But for now I am enjoying the mock up... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I decided to re-assemble the car and weigh her in her current state. Sheridan hoods and top with spoiler, metal dash and instrument cluster in, racing seat, belts, fire system, cool suit (filled), f/g bumpers and front spoiler and 5 gallons of gas. No data ack or front Lexan windshield in yet. 1875lbs ready to drive on the track in current state. AX will be lighter as the cool suit is ~ 30lbs with box/hoses/water. With 231HP at the rear wheels I am about 8.1lbs per HP. My SPB was 14 to 1. Of course I had Power Steering, ABS, modern suspension, etc., but regardless Leeloo should be fun.

Fun stuff, looking forward to monitoring the rest of the build. Interesting to see how Tony's cages have evolved in terms of additional bends and reinforcements. I believe I have one of his first 914 cages, from around 2002.

When you get serious about weight loss......... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
The junk in the trunk is excess, IMO. Maybe someone can make an argument for its usefulness at the track, but I can't. If you had 400-500ft/lbs of torque and tires to match........
The shit box was 1726lbs. IIRC, we had to add 50-60 lbs of ballast to make XP & make sure the fuel tank was full before the last run at Tour events.

You'll like the effects of the down tubes to the towers.

I don't think trunk braces are necessary either
I'd like to take my metal hoods off and I'm sure I could break into the 1700's barrier with fiberglass panels

The rear trunk braces are necessary. Put some power through the car and the rear will flex enough to start pulling the rear cover off the transmission.

Yeah, the rear down braces are a compromise. This is going to be one of those lightweight, all around toys. Once I got past which way to take the car (pure AX, pure track) and just wanted something fun, I decided what would work for both. In fact, more weight is going back in as I plan on building up the 915 I have with WEVO bits. I'll decide after that if I want a 993 3.6 in there.

My goal for AX is to be top 10 in local PCA regions (there is no hope in SCCA here for me to compete, too many awesome cars and drivers) and to be be quicker than the fastest SPB's in NorCal.

And I want the car fuel injected, so it kinda makes things a mashup. Leeloo should still be a ton of fun to drive!

Now...back down my rabbit hole! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif)

Picked up the magic front slicks today from Roger Kraus. Right compound, right height and brand new. Also just about unobtainable as you have to order them out of England.

Think they belong on your car.

Roger Kraus imports them direct to Hayward in containers.

Your project appears to be going along nicely.

If you are welding in some stiffeners, I would suggest a couple of other spots you did not show.

1. inside the cross member between the rear shock mounts on the trunk side of the engine compartment (you will need to open the box on the engine side, make the welds and close back up the box). The upper shock mounts can rip where they were supposed to be welded to the ends of the longs.

2. I would look carefully near the emergency brake indentation near the drivers left thigh. This area tends to crack in most cars that are stressed (and some that aren't).

3. I would suggest making large reinforcements for the front sway bar mounts. Much more area than the weld-in triangular nut plate offered with the various sway bar kits. That are is also prone to cracking/ripping after many years on the track. If you look carefully, you can find where panels are spot welded together. I followed these spot welds and made large plates that spread the load out.
