i have a linksys wired router befsr41 that all of a sudden stopped recognizing the modem. i can plug the lap top right into the modem andit works fine. the router shows tat it is communicating with the network but does not show a signal from the modem. the modem however does show a connection to the router
i tried: - another cat5 cable - resetting the router - resetting the modem all the linksys sites are down this morning so i am unable to download their troubleshooting tutorial. any help would be appreciated. or i could just get the snowblower out, clear the driveway and go to compusa and get another router! thanks in advance. |

Sounds like you've already gone through the propper steps to isolate the problem. Sounds like there is a problem with the router or at least the RJ-45 connection in the router. Check the RJ-45 port in the router. Make sure that all of the pins are in the proper position to be making the connection with the RJ-45 plug from the cable.
Other than that, throw the thing into a snow bank and go out an get a better router (not a Linksys). |

Sometimes mine will get all confused...especially if our power flickered or the cable connection dropped. Best thing to do is power everything down and then bring them up in order. Your hub that serves as the DHCP server, then the cable/dsl modem, then your wireless modem...etc. etc. If you have a specific pc that serves as the control device that init's the cable modem/dsl modem then bring that pc up as the first pc.

if you have ppoe, then the router may have lost the ppoe settings

Well, if it were me, I would buy a Netopia R910 for your house. Unless you need to pass IPX/SPX packets then you would get a R9100 as it is a multi protocol router. I have them at all my clients and the VPN capabilities are great. A little more difficult to set up than a Linksys but once set, you never have to worry about it. Did you reset the router back to factory defaults? Are you on Cable or DSL? If you are on DSL, you may want to check your PPPOE configuration.
