suby 2.5 intake manifold, rotate and progress thread Options

ok engine bar completed just need to weld the body mounts in to the car. corrently bolted to the engine bar at the ends. this bar basicly hanges from the frame behind the susp. consol and loops down under the motor. there are more shots of the various parts that went in to the bar here . the bar looks like i would think they would do this conversion from the factory ( with better welds ) , it basicly hands the engine from as inline with the motor mounts on the engine as possible, there by elimanating as much torque on the mounts as can be and similating the factory bar as much as can be done. all the bar needs now is a clean up from the welding with a grinder and paint.

and yes i have measurement for any body who wants to make one.

I'm havin' a hard time visualizing how this will be mounted in the car, but then I can't remember seeing a suby swap thread (other than fiid's). Nice welding though!! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/welder.gif)

update jan 25 2005 10 15 pm est

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/boldblue.gif) motor is in car hanging on the engine bar, very solid, a cant get it to move by pushing, pulling, shaking motor. to night i pulled the ac compressor and alt, to rotate the intake manifold. first thing there are 10 different connections on the intake manifold to harness, then suby for some reason has 2 water conn to the intake manifold that have to be disconnected ( and extended ) as well as 10 to 15 zip ties holding all the wires to fuel lines, water lines, etc. after all the connections are undone, i disconnected the injector electric and unbolted the intake manifold. it lifted up and turned around with no problems, until i tried to put it done back on to the heads, there is an octopus of wires under the manifold that i might need to run under the water manifold, but i ran out of time. i hate having to leave the storage place before 10 pm.

The water hoses through the manifold bit are there for pre-heating the air. This is a common trick on a wide variety of cars, but is esp. popular with cars that are often used in cold, humid weather and/or high altitude, but of which are great ways to get icing in the intake system. Since for years Subaru's primary US market was Colorado and the other primary ski areas around the country, this isn't surprising. If they're inconvenient, you can almost certainly leave the water fittings open.

I'd like to see some pics with engine in car with the manifold turned around. I'd really like to do this w/o cutting the trunk.

I have already bugged Scott several times because he is doing a really cool thing here. A strong, reliable, relatively current motor that could be turboed or swapped for a similar turbo model, no cutting up front, no cutting in back (hopefully). If this works, I might do it!

Scott, that bar turned out GREAT! Don't lose the blueprints for that! I might want to buy one exactly like it from you if you are up for it. After you finish the conversion of course!

update jan 26 2005

okay today was finish rotating the intake manifold. the things that were road blocks were the following : alt needs to be moved, some connections for the harness arent long enough, the egr doesnt line up any more ( i was removing it any way )

this will be a running story with many pics to follow with each described

first pic is with the manifold leaning forward and top of block showing

second pic shows the manifold installed and bolted down, basicly i unpluged the injectors and when i rotated the manifold i pluged the injectors wires back to were they belong on the block. and then i rotated the coil pack 180 degrees so the spark plug wires are in the proper location as well. other problems where the idle control and throttle position sensor wires are now too far away from the harness, as well as the idle control is right where the alt needs to go. so i figured i would flip the throttle body 180 degrees, this worked beautifully except now the idle control did not line up with the hole in to the air distibution body, but as luck would have it the intake for the egr is close enough for the wires to hook up to the idle control and with nothing but a new gasket and reaming out the holes it will fit. which might not be as effective due to air flow reasons but it will allow the idle control to bleed air in to control the idle and it closes of the egr intake. now i just need to make a blank for the factory idle control hole.

i also had to take apart the throttle linkages for the cable and cruise cable to clear the alt but i wont have cruise any way it just simplifies the throttle cable hook up.

blue arrow is idle control and the red arrow is the throttle position sensor

here is the throttle body flipped with the hole for the idle control shown as well as the throttle linkages removed

the red arrow is the idle control hole and the blue one is the purge control valve the goes to the tank for getting rid off gas vapors, it was kind of in the way of the alt so i unbolted it and moved it to the other side, where the wires for it hook up ( less wires to extend ) , it just ties in to the stock vapor line form the tank and the intake

next we come to the alt install, which i basicly just rotated the alt on it pivot to the spot were the ac compressor was, but to do this i had to modify the bracket. it would not clear the intake, but here are before and after pics if the mod. basicly the top right hand corner and the bolt hole on the bottom right hand corner had to be cut off

now here is a pic of the bracket bolted in with the alt in place, the alt is just up side down when installed in this position. next thing i need to do is to fab a bracket to hold the other side of the alt and give the ablitity to tighten the belt, you can see the cut off part of the bracket clearing the throttle body
