Looking for thoughts on the elctrical cutoffs that Porsche used to use on there race cars, I've particularly seen them on 914-6 GT cars. They were usually mount them just ahead of the windshield and it's kind of a skinny aluminum "L" shaped handle. I noticed that AA was selling them in an oold catalog I have from them. I'm thinking of installing one on my street car and using it as a "theft deterant/preventer" if the Handle is removable - does anyone know? I know other types are removable but I like the old Bosche ones. Does anyone know another source for them?

They're not removable from the Bosch units.

I Doubt the dumb thieves would even know what it was. But in one of the pictures in Vintage Racing this past month - The 914/6 Lufthansa GT car, I thought I saw it in one picture with a black rubber cap. I'll have to check that picture again. I'll also search the adds in that very magazine, thanks for the info.

My bad.

I was going to recommend Parts Obsolete as well as a source for the switch. Any Bosch dealer can get them. They're still on the books. You just need the part number.

I thought the old ones were not removable.

Thanks Martin! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif)

Doug, I was thinking the same thing... the idiots would probably give up before they gave it a turn (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

When you loose the super rare factory part , use a spark plug wire cap boot. Track Fix (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/cool_shades.gif)

So, I'm thinking....

Did the GT cars have the battery relocated?

I didn't think so, but....

If these battery cut-off switches were located in the cowl area, did a battery cable get routed all the way from the battery to this switch and then to the rest of the car?

Do those switches have extra poles so that you can protect your alternator when you throw the switch while the car is running?

Just wondering.

I have seen photos in the front trunk and in the original location. With 914 GT cars, there are so many variations that anything goes. I think placement location may be requirment of regulation of the sanctioning body they race in, HSR, VARA, etc. Or personal preference. No extra poles on the switch. Just two large lugs.

The FIA made the car carry a spare tire as well, so in the day...the battery stayed in original location...This is the SONAUTO car in the photo.

I was wondering the same thing about the wiring. Maybe we should e-mail Jon Lowe and see what he was doing for his. I've only been up close and personal with 1 GT and I didn't get to see the battery cut-off wiring.

I've got my 100mm filler neck, if I'm the one you were referring to.

I measured and cut the filler off. I've also cut the hole out for the overflow tube. Now I need to glass bead it and weld it into my 914 filler neck assembly. I was going to leave the stock 914 neck inside but I think I'm going to cut it out with a 2 1/2" hole saw, leaving the mounting holes on the "inside" of my 100mm neck. POR everything back up and bolt it to the tank. I've bead blasted the stock neck assembly and I've got the cap... now I just need one of those pesky tabs that "someone" has made up (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Doug... sorry for the high-jack! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif)

I don't know what the rules were in the '70's. Currently there are no specifics in HSR, VARA, POC, PCA, NASA or SCCA as to where the cut-off switch needs to be placed. Put it where ever you want as long as you label it with one of these decals.
