Clayton,
You're right about the timing. I shoulda gone into more detail. 1) Aaron has a unisyn we can use on the motor. 2) I thought we tried twisting the cap, but maybe not. It just sounded too good to be off 180 degrees, but it never hurts to try. 3) Do you think a muffler/exhaust leak would cause that? Because I know there's a leak (as you pointed out). I should definatly replace it though. 4) I'll get a cap asap. 5) Thanks for the offer! 6) I have a (german) 009 sitting in my garage I can test also 7) It looked pretty clean, but it never hurts to double check. 8) Hmm, I hope I dont get shocked. If I did I would take a picture. I have quite a bit of hair to stand on end (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif) 9) The spark looked pretty strong through the RPM range, but I have a voltmeter I can test that with. 10) Again, the spark seemed really strong, but I can swap some wires. Dude, clayton, you dont know how helpful you were. Aaron and I were talking about how much we learned over the weekend. Thanks again so much! And if you need anything from me (my clumsy two hands for your car or anything) just give me a ring! BTW: aaron, you can rename the (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ar15.gif) to :clayton: ? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif) |

If you think it is not getting spark the plug would be wet with gas. Easy spark test leave the plugs in pull the wire to the dead cylinder stick another plug in the wire lay it on the tin and crank it up and see a spark or not. And belive it or not another test is wd40. If you think it is the carb not getting fuel into the cyl just spray wd40 down the barrell of the dead cylinder and you should hear a difference. A lawn mower will run off wd40 spraying in the carb with no gas in it.

spark is not enough -- it has to be properly timed spark ... |

If it is timed good enough for 3 cyl to run then it should not have one dead one!

you are correct - it shouldn't. i've seen a dizzy with a flat lobe tho - screwed up timing on only one cylinder... when tracking some problems like this it is best to assume nothing. i have been burned before by thinking "there can't be anything wrong with that, it is brand new." (it -was- new, but it -was- defective. right outa the box. happens...) |

I gained some headway today (i think). I went to start it up tonight and it started up without a hitch (like usual), but it was really quiet. I revved the engine a bit then BAM at about 2k rpm the other side of the engine kicked in. I backed off, then it went back to being a 2 cyl. It reeked of fumes (unburned fuel) and I shut it off. Im really leaning toward carb problems. I pulled the carb apart, but maybe I missed something? Im not sure. I have a spare set of 40s at home that are jetted for my 914 that I can borrow.

check your fuel filter. check your fuel pump. replace those old @$$ fuel lines. verify the carbs are getting fuel.
then we are back to spark.... new dizzy... lose the points.... |

There is only 1 fuel filter though, so it wouldnt make sense that it would shut off fuel flow to only one side. I agree with fuel line and cap and points though. Hey, give me a ride tomorrow to VW parts unlimited (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif).
