Hello 914 world. I'm hoping you guys can help me out with a little info about a possible purchase. A few years ago my mother casually mentioned that her and her husband had purchased a 914. My mom isn't really a car person so I thought it was odd but didn't give it much thought. we live 12 hours away so i've never seen the car. A week ago she called me and said she was moving from upstate NY to Georgia and offered to sell me the car at an extremely low price. I think she mentioned originally paying around 6-7k for the car a few years ago and at the price she offered it to me for, it might as well be free.

Since her car knowledge is lacking, getting any real info from her is tough. I know it runs and drives. They drive it about once a week. It looks clean in the photos but i'm aware of all the rust issues these cars have and what might be hiding. I have had multiple late 70's early 80's Volkswagens and Audi's and currently have a 1970 Saab 96 in the garage. I'm no stranger to quirky european cars.

I'm going to post some pictures and i'm hoping you folks can tell me anything of interest about the car based on the photos. I've done tons of searches/research about the 914 but it's always nice to get info from experienced eyes. Maybe one of you might have even seen this car before? basically any thoughts/info you have based on the photos would be great.

Looks like a nice car from the pictures. It is impossible to give you any opinion without more detailed pics of some of the areas that might contain rust and end up being costly or debilitating for the car. Especially the floor pans or "hell hole" underneath the battery. If she is letting you have it for basically "free" and it is running and driving then grab it. Take a drive in it and you will be hooked. Pics of the engine would be nice so we could determine if it has been converted to carbs or still has the original fuel injection. Good luck with her. You need one of our IN members to help you look it over. Lots of rust buckets in that area of the country. Someone will come along shortly. And (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png)

If your telling me it is practically free. To me that would be 2k or less. Which looking at the pics if it runs & drives I'd say you'll be okay. Rust as you said is the killer & you won't know unless you really dig into. Hopefully a member close by can do a PPI for you. Still it depends a lot on what your paying. A good running driving car for 2k you won't lose money on. Even if you find a bunch of rust. You can part it out & recoup your cost. It all hinges on what you'll be paying over what it has for Rust.

I will be the ass here.
crappy muffler, replace it.
Front spoiler is waiting to die a miserable death as a street car, fiberglass won't last long if you hit a rock, curb, dirt road, speed bump or snow.

Aside from that, buy it and have fun, looks like a cool car.

Is the car in New Albany? I live across the river, and could come by and take a look. In fact I was at Jimmie's Music Shop earlier today for my guitar lesson.

The car looks to be in decent shape. It's still got the mirror and the flap on the visor. Sign of a cared-for car. Someone has installed European front and rear lenses. The door gaps look good. The muffler isn't very good and the spoiler is ugly.. Those things are easily replaced. If you get that car for $2500.00 or less, you can't lose. Of course there will be rust on the underside of the car. If it's been garaged in the NY winters- (where is it- near Binghamton/Oneonta?) it may not be too bad. Go for it and have it shipped to you. It'll be a fun car.

So it is a 74. I think it is a 1.8, but I can't make out the badge for sure. Dash looks to have no cracks, euro lenses, empi (?) rims, after market steering wheel....... Like others have said already rust is the BIG issue. Battery tray, area below it, jack post area and up into the rear suspension area, trunk floors, and floor. Looks to be a non appearance car (no center console, no sway bars, no fog lights)

For a almost free price as you say I think you can't got wrong, unless there is some major rust or mechanical issues.

The car is at my Mom's in Norwich, NY. It's about 50 miles north of Binghamton. I just need to go pick it up. I think I may drive up there and tow dolly it back. The spoiler would be the first thing to go. I'm not a fan. The seats have also been redone in red and black which I don't really care for. I'm going to buy it for sure. I already know i can't lose because the purchase price is less than 2k. it's good to see a few folks local to me chime in. I'm sure I'll need more advice once i get the car back home. It's funny that you mention Jimmy's music. Two of my kids take lessons there and i was actually supposed to be there this afternoon but my step daughters lesson was cancelled.

I'll send a PM with some phone numbers.

My '14 has been on jack stands for several years, it is going back together now, and may be running in a year or so. It is a plebian 1.7, 1970

Eric's car entered the default 914 state a while back - he put it on jack stands to rebuild the engine. He has a Tennessee orange 2.0 with Megasquirt.

If they drive it every week then there is no reason you couldn't fly out and drive it home.

I agree. Fly up and drive it home. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

Nonstop. And the some more (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

Then just (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) drive it some more.

Six days a week.

Never let it see any jack stands. And do not add any money into it. Red seats are fine. Just put money into gas (weekly) and maybe some oil(quarterly) and every few years some new rubber. And then drive it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

Best ROI ever.

You will regret it if you don't buy it. Heck, your mom may even take payments! I would clean the mess out of the inside and get rid of the red seat covers. The original interior looks like it was brown and who knows what the original exterior color was?

I'd go for it. They are REALLY fun to drive.

Good Luck and (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png)

It doesn't appear to have fog lights but doesn't it look like it has a console, just missing the gauges? I'm waiting on ether photos and the VIN#. I've already told my mother I'll buy the car. Trying to figure out the easiest and most economical way to get it home to Louisville
