Can you hear the fuel pump running? If so pull the air cleaner and see if the accel pump squirts fuel when you open the throttle. If that works, pump it a few times and hold the throttle about 1/4 down and crank. That's how my carb'ed 1.7 likes to start. If you're not getting fuel out of the accel pump you need to fix that first… Good luck

I agree, turn the key and listen for fuel pump, wait a few secs and pump a few times and she fires right up.

That's a cold start. If I rush the process and start cranking before it gets fuel pressure up it might crank a bit. Remember carbed cars have low fuel pressure so I like to give it a good prime.

Hot starts are basically a key turn.

Could be since you ran it out of gas you've tossed up some 'gunk' in the base of the tank. Could also have clogged up the fuel strainer? Could also have burned up the fuel pump running it dry? Could also be poor fuel line routing not allowing the pump to prime could also be.....

Cold starting a carbed 914 can be a little tricky.
My process was three pumps of gas, and hold the peddle ~1/2 way down.

You need to keep the peddle down a bit until the engine has some heat in it, or else it will just stall when you take your foot off.

And, yeah, change the fuel filter.

Hand throttle solves that problem.

Replace the fuel filter,

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) running out of gas completely grabs the trash in the tank. Checking the fuel at the carb will tell you if you are getting fuel. If not, check the fuel filter first. Easier than a pump.
