Car is looking great! "Last weekend, put on new tires. The old ones looked great, but when I had the date code checked. they were from 1996! Yowza! " What brand and tires size did you go with? I have 165s on aftermarket wheels. And I bought some 4lug Fuchs that came with 205/50s, which I'm running now. Not sure I like the lower profile, but I do like width. The ride seems very harsh, I can feel every bump and crack in the road, so much jarring that the engine lid pops open sometimes. But I might have too much tire pressure. I think the stock size is too skinny IMHO, but not sure I want to keep driving these 205s/50s either. 195x65x15 or 205x60x15 fit the fuchs, look better and ride nice. I have mine at 28psi. Also make sure your shocks are anything but kyb's. |

It was $314 for all four including mounting, balance, state tire fees, tax, etc. I don't think I can go any wider, there's very little gap between the tire and fender. Frankly, I don't know squat about this tire, but it is the same size as my old old ones and were in stock at the tire shop. A lady had ordered them for a Super Beetle, but she didn't show up for her appointment. The tire shop guy assured me that they are good tires, don't know if you can believe those guys further than you can throw 'em. So far, pleased with these tires. The old ones felt like riding on wheels carved from stone. Ride is SIGNIFICANTLY improved with these tires. |

Today's projects:
1. Replaced the targa to windshield rubber seal. OK guys, what the secret to this? Took me about an hour to force the seal onto the metal lip that runs across the top of the windshield. My thumbs are sore from all the pushing. There must some trick to this. I soaped 'em up and everything, but it was still VERY hard to force the seal onto that lip. 2. Fixed the front driver's side visor. 3. Fixed the seat belt retractors. They were sticking so bad that it was hard to fasten the belts, because the retractors wouldn't feed the belt out. Both side work perfectly now. . Attached image(s) |

I get the top seal mostly on, then put the top in place and lean on it to push it forward. Then hook both front latches. That puts lots of nice even pressure across the whole thing.

^^^ Ah, that sounds like something I should do anyway, just to make sure it's pushed in evenly all the way across. Thanks.
My thumbs are still sore this afternoon, from putting in that seal yesterday. |

Leaking oil switch replaced today. Hopefully fewer spots on the garage floor now.

Good luck with the Nankangs... every set I sold and mounted came back within 3 months with TERRIBLE cross wear patterns and riding even worse. Depend I'm sure on how many miles you put on them regularly but my experience has been bad. Had to refund customers left and right- ended up installing Hankooks and making people smile. You gotta trust a tire that Prof. Snape promotes! (my kids are Potterheads...) |

Well, hopefully Discount Tire will honor the warranty if they fry out quick. I mostly use this car for cruising along the coast, so I imagine the tires should be fine for that.
Actually, I could have gone quite a bit wider in a lower profile, and probably would have been happier with that. |

Getting ready for the annual "Route 66 Classic 2016" tour to Arizona.
Yowza, what a busy day getting ready! 1. Put on new wiper blades. Excellent suggestion from (I forgot who). Mine were crap. 2. Reinstalled the sun visor... just to hope.... 3. Put in a new radio with blue tooth. 4. Put in new speakers. 5. Washed and waxed the exterior, dusted the interior. Again... just to hope... 6. Touched up a few paint chips. 7. Lubed every latch and hinge I could find. 8. Fiddled with the %$#@ remote trunk release. It keeps sticking. Not sure if I have it fixed... 9. Filled up with gas. 10. Yesterday had all four wheels balanced. 11: A few days ago: oil/filter change, new fan belt, all CV joints cleaned of the old grease, then new grease. I "think" I'm ready. Now just need to pack! smile.gif Attached thumbnail(s) |
