I would like to replace my front trunk springs with gas shocks. The problem is most gas shocks the relaxed state is open. However to replace the spring with out changing the design requires a gas shock that is closed in the relaxed state

This is where I need some help from my fellow 914world members

I need the measurements of the spring on the car with the hood open & closed. The delta of these will allow me to order the right spring. My car is in pieces and getting ready for paint

Thanks

David

The easy way is to remove the springs, and use the struts on the hinge mount and the hood itself. Camp Counselor Craig from Camp914 has a kit that does just that.

Mine bent the spring tabs...I'm going back to springs when I put my car back together. I may be in the minority though.

I'm using the camp914 set up on my rear but I want something different for the front. I want to use as close to the factory mounting points as possible

Thanks

I noticed that the spring tab appeared a tad thin so I welded an 18ga piece to it. Glad that I did after seeing this.

I did mine before the kit from Camp914 was available. I used 911 engine lid shocks.

Still working just fine 12 years later ...

But still, can someone measure for him? I can do it on Sunday if it's still unanswered.

There is 2.5 inches of travel with the factory spring. The close assist gas spring below is good for 30 lbs so two of them ought to be appropriate for the front trunk hood.

I got some rough measurements. Close enough for this application I think. it was about 14.75" when the hood is open, and 17.25" when the hood is closed. This is from the eyelet on the hinge to the last adjustment notch on the fender.

Those are normal struts. The close assist type are different.
